Curimatopsis sabana is a tiny, recently described curimatid, known only from the río Paragua and río Caroní drainages of the Orinoco basin in the Gran Sabana region of Bolívar State, Venezuela. It belongs to a genus of small, toothless-mouthed detritivores in the family Curimatidae — quiet, unglamorous grazers that stand in complete contrast to the piranha stereotype most people bring to this section of the atlas. At a maximum recorded size of roughly 1.5 in, this is one of the smallest fish covered here, restricted to remote highland pools and tributaries at 886–1017 ft elevation, and it has essentially no footprint in the aquarium trade or the literature beyond its original description.

Taxonomy & naming

Curimatopsis sabana was described by Melo in 2020 in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology, based on specimens from the río Paragua and río Carapo, tributaries of the río Caroní in the Orinoco basin of Bolívar State, Venezuela. The species name "sabana" refers to the Gran Sabana, the high tepui-studded plateau of the western Guiana Shield where the type locality lies.

The genus Curimatopsis sits in the family Curimatidae, within the order Characiformes — a family of small, laterally compressed, detritivorous characins distinguished from most of their relatives by a toothless (or near-toothless) mouth. Melo's description places C. sabana within the C. macrolepis species complex, a group of superficially similar small curimatids distinguished mainly by scale counts, body proportions and details of male fin morphology. As a species described only in 2020, C. sabana does not yet appear in general aquarium references such as FishBase, and almost nothing beyond the type description has been published on it since.

Morphology

Curimatopsis sabana is a genuinely tiny characin: the type series consists of a holotype at 1.5 in standard length and a paratype at 1.5 in SL, with the species' documented maximum around 1.5 in SL. That places it among the smallest fish in this entire atlas section — nothing like the piranhas, pacus or wolf fish that dominate popular ideas of this group.

Like other members of its genus, C. sabana has a toothless mouth, an adaptation for grazing detritus and biofilm rather than biting prey or plant material, and the characteristically deep, compressed, silvery body typical of small curimatids. Melo's description notes sexual dimorphism in males, expressed in the depth of the caudal peduncle and details of fin shape — a subtle difference rather than a dramatic one, and not something a casual observer would likely notice without direct comparison of specimens.

Habitat

The species is known only from the río Paragua and río Carapo, both tributaries of the río Caroní in the Orinoco basin, within the Gran Sabana ecoregion of the western Guiana Shield in Bolívar State, Venezuela. Recorded collection sites sit at 892–1017 ft elevation, on the sandstone-and-savanna tepui plateau that gives the Gran Sabana its name and its unusually clear, mineral-poor waters.

The type description notes the fish was collected from drying pools, suggesting it tolerates or even depends on the seasonal contraction of small tributary channels during the dry season, a common pattern among small Guiana Shield characins. Beyond the bare type-locality data, no detailed water-chemistry readings or broader ecological study of the species has been published; this account should be read as reflecting a narrow, specific range rather than a well-studied habitat profile.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Curimatopsis sabana itself has been published, but the genus Curimatopsis is characterised by a toothless mouth adapted to grazing fine organic material — detritus and biofilm scraped from submerged surfaces and sediment — rather than predation or browsing on macrophytes. The closely related C. macrolepis is documented as taking detritus in the wild and readily accepting soft foods such as brine shrimp nauplii, cyclops and flake in the aquarium.

Given the shared genus-level morphology (the toothless mouth in particular is diagnostic for the group), it is reasonable to infer a similar detritivore/omnivore diet for C. sabana, but this is inference from its relatives rather than a documented fact for this species specifically; data on C. sabana's own diet is sparse to nonexistent in the literature.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Curimatopsis sabana in the literature. The only dimorphism noted in the original description concerns male caudal-peduncle depth and fin morphology, which may play a role in mate recognition or courtship display in the genus, but this is speculative extrapolation from morphology rather than an observed behaviour. Data on reproductive behaviour in this species is sparse.

Breeding

There is no published record of Curimatopsis sabana being bred in captivity, and no aquarium-trade presence to draw on for anecdotal breeding accounts. Most small Curimatidae, where breeding has been documented at all, are egg-scatterers with no parental care, consistent with the broader pattern across open-water and detritivorous minor characins in this group — but this has not been confirmed for C. sabana itself, and it should not be presented as an established fact for this species. Given its total absence from the aquarium trade, breeding in a home aquarium is essentially theoretical.

In the aquarium

Curimatopsis sabana is not a fish anyone is likely to encounter in the hobby. Described only in 2020 from a narrow, remote highland range in Venezuela, it has no aquarium-trade history, no care literature, and does not appear in standard references such as FishBase. Any care recommendations would have to be extrapolated from its close relative C. macrolepis — a peaceful, soft, neutral-to-slightly-acidic water shoaling fish that takes small soft foods — but that is a guess about a different species, not documented guidance for this one.

What can be said with confidence from the type description is that this is a very small fish (around 1.5 in maximum), which if it were ever kept would need to be treated as a delicate nano species requiring a peaceful group setup rather than anything resembling the tank demands of its more famous piranha and pacu relatives in this atlas section.

Conservation

The original description (Melo, 2020) characterises Curimatopsis sabana's conservation status as Least Concern, reasoning that its remote, high-elevation Gran Sabana habitat sees minimal anthropogenic disturbance. A formal, dedicated IUCN Red List assessment for the species could not be confirmed as of this writing — the Least Concern status traces to the primary description rather than to a published IUCN assessment page.

As a narrow-range endemic known from only two tributary systems on the Guiana Shield, C. sabana is nonetheless the kind of species worth watching: its entire known distribution is small enough that any future mining, damming or land-use change in the Gran Sabana headwaters could disproportionately affect it, even though no such threat has been documented to date.
