Taxonomy & naming
Distichodus altus was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1899, one of dozens of Congo basin characins he named around the turn of the twentieth century from museum expedition material. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae, a family of exclusively African characiform fishes that also includes the citharinids' close relatives and the pike-like Ichthyoborinae, and within that family to the genus Distichodus, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as containing several dozen valid species distributed across the Congo, Niger, Nile, Volta, Senegal and Zambezi/Okavango drainages.
The genus name Distichodus is built from Greek roots referring to the fish's distinctive two rows of teeth, a diagnostic feature separating the genus from other distichodontids. Species-level identification within Distichodus is notoriously difficult and relies heavily on precise body-depth ratios, fin-ray counts and colour-pattern details — the body-depth proportion of roughly 2 to 2.2 times in total length recorded for D. altus is exactly this kind of diagnostic measurement, rather than a casual field mark. As with much of the genus, the species is far better known to systematists than to aquarists, and it is not a fixture of the aquarium trade the way its larger, more commonly imported relatives D. sexfasciatus and D. lusosso are.
Morphology
Distichodus altus shows the deep-bodied, laterally compressed profile typical of the taller-bodied species in its genus, with a body height running about 2 to 2.2 times into the total length — proportions in the same range as other deep-bodied Distichodus rather than the more elongated, torpedo-shaped species also found in the genus. Like other distichodontids it has a small, underslung, herbivore-adapted mouth set well back from the tip of a somewhat pointed snout, equipped with the two rows of teeth that give the genus its name.
Exact maximum length for D. altus is not well documented in the available literature. As a point of reference, the genus as a whole spans a wide size range: several smaller Distichodus species top out around 6–10 in, while the well-known D. sexfasciatus and D. lusosso exceed 12 in in the wild. Given the deep-bodied build recorded for D. altus, prospective keepers should treat its adult size as an open question and plan for a mid-sized-to-large fish rather than assume it will stay compact.
Habitat
Distichodus altus is native to African river systems, consistent with the genus's overall distribution across the Congo, Niger, Nile, Volta, Senegal and Zambezi/Okavango drainages — warm, typically soft-to-moderately hard, often tannin-influenced river water rather than the extreme soft blackwater associated with South American characins. Precise locality data specific to this species was not found in the available sources, and this account does not assign it to a single river system beyond noting it falls within the broader African distichodontid range.
Distichodus species in general favour flowing water with a reasonable current, reflecting their evolutionary history as river-channel grazers rather than still-water fish, and this preference for movement and oxygenation is a consistent thread across the genus regardless of which particular drainage a species comes from.
Feeding
Distichodus altus is, like the rest of its genus, a herbivore-leaning omnivore. Distichodus species graze heavily on plant material in the wild and are documented as consuming large quantities of vegetation, algae and detritus, with only incidental amounts of animal matter. This diet is directly reflected in the genus's aquarium reputation: Distichodus are well known for uprooting and shredding live aquarium plants, sometimes reducing a planted tank to bare substrate within days.
In captivity, the genus is best maintained on a vegetable-forward diet — spirulina-based flake or pellet foods, blanched vegetables such as spinach, courgette/zucchini and cucumber, and algae wafers — supplemented with occasional meaty foods like bloodworm or brine shrimp. A diet that is too heavy in protein and too light in fibre is associated with poor long-term condition in the genus, so vegetable matter should form the bulk of the ration rather than an occasional treat.
Mating
No courtship or pairing behaviour specific to Distichodus altus was found in the available sources, and this account does not speculate. Across the genus generally, spawning is tied to a wild migratory phase associated with seasonal river-level changes, a behaviour that is difficult to observe closely in the wild and essentially impossible to replicate in a home aquarium, which is likely why so little species-level courtship detail exists for Distichodus in the literature.

Aquarium and care-guide sources describe captive breeding of Distichodus species as extremely challenging to essentially unheard of, with no documented parental care since the eggs are simply scattered and abandoned rather than guarded.
Given this, virtually all Distichodus available in the trade — including, presumably, any D. altus that reach hobbyists — are wild-caught rather than captive-bred. Anyone hoping to breed this species should treat it as an open research question rather than an achievable home-aquarium project.
In the aquarium
Distichodus altus should be approached with the same caution the whole genus demands: these are unpredictable, plant-destroying fish that do not fit neatly into a typical community or planted tank. Any live plants in the aquarium should be considered at risk, since Distichodus species are well documented as uprooting and shredding vegetation as a normal part of their grazing behaviour rather than an occasional bad habit — a heavily rock-and-driftwood "river-scape" with tough, unpalatable plants like Anubias or Microsorum tied to hardscape is a safer bet than a lush planted layout.
Distichodus are also described as peaceful but unpredictable towards similarly sized tankmates, meaning compatibility can shift with individual temperament and should be watched rather than assumed. A strong water current, reflecting the genus's river-channel origins, along with excellent filtration and warm, well-oxygenated water, suits the group better than a still, sluggish setup. Because documented maximum size for D. altus is uncertain and other deep-bodied Distichodus reach well over 12 in, keepers should provide a large aquarium with room to grow rather than sizing the tank to a juvenile's dimensions, and should expect a long-term, wild-caught fish rather than a captive-bred stock animal.
Conservation
Distichodus altus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, in an assessment dated 2022. This status is consistent with the pattern seen across much of the genus, where wide-ranging African riverine species with no major documented population decline tend to fall into the Least Concern category, though data on population trends for many individual Distichodus species — including this one — remain comparatively thin.
No specific threats to D. altus were identified in the available sources. As with many African river fishes, broader pressures such as damming, sedimentation and water-quality degradation are relevant long-term considerations for the drainages the genus inhabits, even though this species itself is not currently flagged as threatened.
