Taxonomy & naming
Distichodus brevipinnis was described by the English ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1864, the same year in which Günther also erected the family Distichodontidae itself. It belongs to that family within the order Characiformes, alongside the citharinids and Hepsetidae as part of the broader African characin radiation, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises the genus Distichodus as holding several dozen valid species distributed across tropical Africa, ranging from small, peaceful nano species to large, aggressively plant-shredding aquarium giants such as D. sexfasciatus and D. lusosso.
The specific epithet brevipinnis is Latin for "short fin," a direct reference to the dorsal fin base, which in this species runs only about three-quarters the length of the head — a diagnostic character distinguishing it from longer-finned congeners such as D. rostratus and D. engycephalus, with which it shares part of its Nigerian range and is sometimes confused in the trade. As with much of the genus, taxonomic revision within Distichodontidae has been active; keepers should treat any older or unfamiliar combination encountered in older hobby literature with caution and defer to current Catalog of Fishes usage of the genus Distichodus for this species.
Morphology
Distichodus brevipinnis has the classic Distichodus body plan: an elongated, laterally compressed, silvery-grey body with a small, subterminal mouth positioned for grazing rather than predation, and a specialised dentition adapted to cropping plant material. FishBase gives a maximum published size of 23 in standard length for the species, though field surveys — notably specimens from the Anambra River in Nigeria — more commonly document individuals in the 4.5–15.5 in range, and some sources cite outlier figures as high as 23.5–27.5 in; either way, this is a large-bodied fish at full maturity, not a small or delicate one.
The short dorsal-fin base that gives the species its name is the clearest field character separating it from its longer-finned relatives. Colouration is a fairly plain silver-grey overall, without the bold banding of D. sexfasciatus or the more ornate patterning seen in some other genus members, which is part of why this species has remained a minor curiosity in the aquarium trade rather than a popular display fish.
Habitat
This species is native to the Sudanian ichthyofaunal province of West and Central Africa, documented from the Senegal, Gambia and Niger river systems (downstream from around Bamako), the Volta and Chad basins, and the White Nile. It is a riverine, demersal species associated with the main channels and margins of these warm, seasonally fluctuating tropical rivers rather than with still lake habitats, and it is notably absent from the lower Volta and the coastal river basins east of the Niger where its close relative D. rostratus takes over ecologically.
As with other Sudanian-province rivers, water across this range runs warm year-round with strong seasonal hydrological swings between flood and dry-season low water, generally soft to moderately mineralised rather than the extreme blackwater conditions associated with Central African rainforest rivers such as the Congo. The cache does not provide precise temperature or pH figures specific to this species; keepers should treat published ranges as approximate and consistent with typical warm West African river conditions rather than cool or hard-water settings.
Feeding
Distichodus brevipinnis is a herbivore/omnivore grazer, and its mouth structure reflects that specialisation: a small, precisely adapted feeding apparatus suited to stripping submerged and marginal vegetation rather than to hunting. Field observations describe the species readily consuming young rice plants from around 2–2.5 in in height onward, underscoring both its plant-grazing habit and its potential to be destructive toward soft aquarium vegetation, a trait shared broadly across the genus.
In the aquarium this translates to a diet built around vegetable matter — blanched vegetables, spirulina- and algae-based foods, and high-fibre herbivore pellets or flake — supplemented with some protein such as bloodworm or high-quality pellet food to round out the diet. Keepers should not expect this species to leave live plants alone; like its larger relatives, it is best kept with hardy, unpalatable plants or none at all.
Mating
There is essentially no documented courtship or pairing behaviour for Distichodus brevipinnis in either the wild-biology or aquarium literature reviewed here. Congeneric Distichodus species undergo a migratory spawning phase in nature, moving to specific breeding grounds in response to seasonal flooding cues, a strategy that is very difficult to replicate in captivity and that likely applies to this species as well, though it has not been specifically confirmed for D. brevipinnis. No external sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species; sexes cannot currently be reliably distinguished by colour or fin shape.
Breeding
Breeding of Distichodus brevipinnis has not been established in the aquarium hobby. Like other members of the genus, its natural reproduction is tied to a migratory spawning event in flooded river systems that is essentially impossible to reproduce in a home aquarium, and available accounts describe Distichodus species generally as egg-scatterers with no parental care, rather than nest-builders or mouthbrooders — but this is inferred from the genus rather than confirmed specifically for this species. Prospective keepers should not expect to breed this fish at home; it should be regarded, honestly, as an unbred aquarium species sourced from wild collection or general commercial supply.
In the aquarium
Distichodus brevipinnis is a large, plain-coloured grazer best suited to spacious, robustly filtered river-biotope tanks rather than to typical planted community aquariums. With a documented maximum size around 23 in SL, and even the more commonly seen size range still running well into the 12 in-plus class as an adult, this is a fish that will outgrow a modest tank; keepers should plan for several hundred litres of swimming space and strong water movement mimicking its native river habitat, not a standard community setup.
Because the species actively grazes on plant material, live aquatic plants are a poor match unless they are unusually tough or the aquascape is built around hardscape, rockwork and driftwood instead. Diet should lean vegetable-forward with occasional protein, and given the near-total absence of captive-breeding history, any specimens in the trade are very likely wild-caught or farmed incidentally alongside other Distichodus species, which is worth factoring into a purchase decision on sustainability grounds.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Distichodus brevipinnis as Least Concern (2020.2 assessment), reflecting its fairly wide distribution across multiple Sudanian river systems in West and Central Africa — the Senegal, Gambia, Niger, Volta, Chad and White Nile — rather than dependence on a single, narrowly threatened water body. This is not one of the genus's headline aquarium-trade species, so collection pressure specifically for the hobby is a minor factor relative to broader regional issues.
As with other freshwater fish across the Sudanian rivers, the wider pressures on this species' habitat are the general ones facing West African river systems — damming, water abstraction, sedimentation and pollution associated with agricultural and urban development — though none of these currently push the species out of the Least Concern category according to the IUCN assessment.
