Distichodus engycephalus was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1864. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae within the order Characiformes, a family of African characins that also includes the deep-bodied grazing citharinids' close relatives and ranges from tiny nano species such as Neolebias and Nannaethiops up to large, heavily built plant-eaters like D. sexfasciatus and D. lusosso. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name and continues to recognise Distichodus engycephalus as a distinct species within the genus.
The specific epithet describes the fish's most distinctive feature: a narrow ("engy-") head ("-cephalus") compared to other Distichodus. In the aquarium trade the species is frequently confused with, and shipped alongside, the similarly elongate D. rostratus and the deeper-bodied D. brevipinnis — exporters and retailers do not reliably separate the three, so tank-bred or wild-caught stock sold simply as "Distichodus" should be checked carefully against head and body proportions before assuming the identification is correct.
