Taxonomy & naming
Distichodus fasciolatus was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898, based on material from the Congo basin. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae — a group of largely herbivorous African characins distinct from the predatory Characidae and Serrasalmidae lineages of South America — within the order Characiformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Distichodus fasciolatus Boulenger, 1898 as the valid combination, and GBIF occurrence data confirms the same name and authority.
The genus Distichodus contains roughly 20 species ranging from small, peaceful grazers to large, aggressive plant-eaters such as this species and D. sexfasciatus, with which D. fasciolatus is frequently confused in the aquarium trade on account of a broadly similar banded pattern. The species name fasciolatus reflects the fish's diagnostic vertical banding, discussed further below.
Morphology
Distichodus fasciolatus has the classic distichodontid body plan: laterally compressed, deep through the shoulder, and tapering to a slender, sharply forked "sharktail" caudal fin that gives the species its common name. The head is small relative to the body, with a small, underslung mouth bearing rows of flattened, multicuspid teeth adapted for grazing plant material rather than seizing prey. Adults develop a pronounced reddish tint across the fins, especially the dorsal, anal and caudal fins, contrasting with a silvery-olive body crossed by several dark vertical bands that are most distinct in juveniles and subadults and tend to fade somewhat with age.
FishBase records a maximum published length of 23.5 in total length and a weight of up to 3 kg, making this one of the larger commonly traded Distichodus species. Juveniles sold in the aquarium trade at a few centimetres give little indication of this eventual size, which is a frequent source of surprise — and of outgrown tanks — for keepers who do not plan ahead.
Habitat
The species is native to the Congo River basin, recorded from the Lower Congo upstream to the upper Lualaba; reports from the Luapula-Moero system and Lake Tanganyika are considered questionable and are not treated as confirmed range. Within the Congo system it occupies streams, lakes and large river channels, typically as a bottom-oriented grazer working over vegetated margins and submerged structure rather than open water.
FishBase gives a tropical water range of roughly 73–81 °F and pH 6.0–8.0 for the species, consistent with the generally warm, circumneutral-to-slightly-alkaline conditions found across much of the Congo basin's slower-flowing habitats. As with many Congo basin fish, local conditions vary between clearer lake-fed reaches and more turbid or tannin-influenced river stretches, so the species should not be assumed to require the soft, strongly acidic blackwater associated with some other African and South American characins.
Feeding
Distichodus fasciolatus is primarily herbivorous, grazing aquatic plants, algae, leaves and seeds, and it supplements this plant-based diet with insect larvae taken opportunistically from the substrate and vegetation. This heavily vegetable-leaning diet, combined with a large adult size and a genuinely voracious appetite, makes the species a serious threat to any live plants sharing its tank — a well-documented trait in hobbyist accounts of the fish.
In the aquarium, keepers are advised to offer a diet biased towards vegetation: blanched vegetables such as courgette and spinach, algae-based sinking foods, frozen peas and carrot chunks, alongside occasional protein such as bloodworm or quality pellets. A powerful filter is recommended less for waste from a carnivorous diet than to keep pace with the mess a large, constantly grazing fish generates.
Mating
Very little is documented about courtship behaviour in Distichodus fasciolatus specifically, and the species is not known to pair off or display distinct courtship rituals in aquarium accounts. No reliable external sexual dimorphism has been reported — males and females are not readily distinguished by colour, fin shape or body proportions in the sources available, and the species is essentially never sexed or paired deliberately by hobbyists.
Breeding
Distichodus fasciolatus is an egg-scattering species, in keeping with the general pattern for Distichodus and the wider Distichodontidae, but it is not known to be bred in home aquaria. FishBase notes that wild spawning is associated with the seasonal flood cycle, with fish moving to spawn near river banks ahead of the seasonal rains, after which fry feed on zooplankton and insect larvae in the flooded margins before shifting to the adult's plant-based diet as they grow.
No parental care is documented for this species. Given its large adult size, its need for very large volumes of water, and the absence of any established aquarium-breeding protocol, D. fasciolatus should be considered essentially unbred in captivity — every specimen in the trade is a wild-caught or wild-collected import rather than a farmed fish.
In the aquarium
Distichodus fasciolatus is a peaceful fish by temperament, but its combination of a 23.5 in adult size and a hearty, plant-directed appetite makes it unsuitable for anything but a very large aquarium. AquariumWiki recommends a minimum of 100 US gal as a starting point, with considerably more space required as the fish approaches its full size, alongside strong filtration to handle both its bioload and its messy grazing habits.
Live plants are effectively off the menu in a tank housing this species — it will shred soft-leaved vegetation readily — so keepers generally furnish the aquarium with hardy, tough-leaved plants if any, along with driftwood and open swimming space. Tankmates should be chosen for size rather than temperament, since D. fasciolatus is not aggressive but will simply outgrow and potentially intimidate smaller fish through sheer bulk. As with other large, long-lived characins, prospective keepers should plan for the fish's full adult size from the outset rather than upgrading tanks reactively.
Conservation
Distichodus fasciolatus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, an assessment dated 16 February 2009, reflecting its wide distribution across the Congo basin and the absence of documented major threats to the species as a whole. It is not the subject of significant targeted conservation concern in the sources available.
As with other Congo basin fish, broader pressures on the basin's freshwater systems — including habitat disturbance and regional development — are long-term watch items for the ecosystem generally, though none are specifically flagged against this species in current assessments. The aquarium trade in D. fasciolatus continues to rely on wild-collected specimens rather than captive-bred stock.
