Taxonomy & naming
Distichodus kasaiensis was described in 2018 by Emmanuel Vreven, Bauke Moelants and Jos Snoeks, in a paper that split it out alongside a second new species, D. ingae, from material collected in the Congo basin: "Distichodus kasaiensis and D. ingae, two new distichodontid species (Characiformes: Distichodontidae) from the Congo basin," published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 28, pages 177–192). It belongs to the family Distichodontidae, a group endemic to Africa, within the order Characiformes.
The genus name Distichodus derives from the Greek di- (two) + stichos (row) + odon (tooth), referring to the two rows of teeth set in the lower jaw that characterise the genus. The species epithet kasaiensis directly references the Kasai River, the type locality and apparent core of this species' range within the Congo basin. As a species described only within the last decade, D. kasaiensis has not accumulated a body of secondary literature or hobby documentation, and it should not be confused with better-known, longer-established congeners such as D. sexfasciatus or D. lusosso, which have a much longer taxonomic and aquarium history.
Morphology
Distichodus kasaiensis has not been documented in aquarium or popular literature with a reliably reported size or detailed external description; the diagnostic morphological characters used to separate it from other Distichodus species are set out in the original 2018 description rather than in secondary sources. Data on this species' precise adult length is sparse, and no figure from the cache can be stated with confidence.
What can be said comes from the genus as a whole: Distichodus species share an elongate to moderately deep, laterally compressed body plan with a small, underslung mouth bearing the genus's characteristic two rows of lower-jaw teeth, adapted for grazing rather than for seizing prey. Size varies enormously across the genus — from small, lightly built species to large river fish exceeding 12–15.5 in — so no single figure can be extrapolated to D. kasaiensis without risking a fabricated claim; this account will not do so.
Habitat
Distichodus kasaiensis is documented from the Kasai River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, part of the wider Congo River system. Available literature places it specifically within the Lower Lulua River region of the Kasai basin, an area identified in freshwater biodiversity surveys as a hotspot of ichthyofaunal diversity that is currently under pressure from deforestation, mining and destructive fishing practices.
As with other Congo basin distichodontids, the species is associated with river-channel and floodplain habitats typical of the wider genus — grassy banks, swamps and slow-flowing margins used by shoaling Distichodus species elsewhere in the basin — though site-specific water chemistry data for D. kasaiensis itself has not been located. Congo basin waters in this region are generally warm and can run soft and tannin-influenced, consistent with the broader pattern for African rainforest-fed rivers, but no measured temperature or pH range specific to this species is available in the cache, so none is asserted here.
Feeding
Distichodus as a genus is predominantly herbivorous to omnivorous, with species documented feeding on periphyton, macrophytes and detritus; some congeners, such as D. lusosso, are more generalist in diet. No stomach-content or dietary study specific to D. kasaiensis has been located, so its exact diet is inferred from the genus rather than confirmed for the species itself.
Given the strong herbivore/grazer tendency documented across Distichodus, a keeper working from genus-level expectations should assume a plant-and-detritus-leaning omnivore rather than a predatory fish, but this is an inference from relatives, not a documented fact about D. kasaiensis specifically.
Mating
No courtship or pairing behaviour has been documented for Distichodus kasaiensis. As a species described only in 2018 with essentially no aquarium history, there is no record of conditioning, pairing or spawning triggers to report, and none should be inferred or invented here.
Breeding
Distichodus and the related citharinids are, as a group, egg-scattering characins that are rarely bred in the home aquarium; Distichodus in particular has a reputation among hobbyists as very difficult to spawn in captivity. No breeding record — in the wild or in captivity — exists for Distichodus kasaiensis specifically in the available literature.
Given the species' very recent description, its restricted known range and the complete absence of aquarium trade history, it is honest to state plainly that D. kasaiensis is not a species with any documented breeding, captive or otherwise. Prospective breeders should not expect established protocols; none exist.
In the aquarium
Distichodus kasaiensis has no established presence in the aquarium hobby. It is not documented in aquarium care literature, and unlike widely traded congeners such as D. sexfasciatus (six-banded distichodus, growing to roughly 10–12 in) or D. lusosso (long-nosed distichodus, reported to 14–16 in standard length), there is no reliable record of D. kasaiensis being kept, sold or bred by hobbyists.
Because size, temperament and water requirements are undocumented for this species, no specific tank recommendation can responsibly be given. Anyone encountering a fish sold under this name should treat the identification with caution and should assume, based on the genus generally, that any Distichodus will need a large aquarium, plant-safe or plant-free furnishing given the genus's grazing tendencies, and other robust, similarly sized tankmates — but these are genus-level cautions, not documented facts about D. kasaiensis.
Conservation
Distichodus kasaiensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; no assessment could be located, consistent with its status as a recently described (2018), data-sparse species. Its known range within the Lower Lulua River region of the Kasai basin falls within a documented freshwater biodiversity hotspot that faces mounting pressure from deforestation, artisanal and industrial mining, and destructive fishing methods.
With no population data, no red-list assessment and a narrow known distribution in a threatened watershed, D. kasaiensis is a species to watch rather than one that can be characterised as secure — but any status beyond "not evaluated" would be speculation not supported by the available record.
