Taxonomy & naming
Distichodus mbiniensis was described in 2021 by Schmidt, Knobloch and Barrientos, based on specimens from the upper Mbini River drainage in Equatorial Guinea; the holotype (USNM 451317) measures 4 in standard length. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae — a strictly African characiform family of grazing and browsing river fish — within the large genus Distichodus, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as the taxonomic authority for valid names in this group.
The species is distinguished from its closest relative, D. notospilus, by a combination of characters: a higher lateral-line scale count (41–42 scales, rarely 40, versus 37–39 in D. notospilus), a much less prominent dark spot at the base of the caudal fin, and a comparatively shorter dorsal fin (21.4–27.2% of standard length, versus 22.7–34.2% in D. notospilus). The species epithet "mbiniensis" refers to the Mbini River, itself named from "Mbini", the Ndowe (Bantu) name for the Río Wele — the river to which the species appears to be endemic.
Morphology
Distichodus mbiniensis is a small-bodied member of a genus that otherwise spans an enormous size range — FishBase records Distichodus species from roughly 2 in up to well over a metre in adult length, and D. mbiniensis sits firmly at the small end of that spread, with a maximum recorded size of 5 in standard length (about 5 in). Like other Distichodus, it shares the family's characteristic elongated, laterally compressed body and small, protrusible mouth suited to grazing rather than seizing prey.
The formal description leans on fine anatomical detail to separate it from its nearest relative — lateral-line scale counts of 41–42 versus 37–39 in D. notospilus, a markedly fainter dark blotch at the caudal-fin base, and a shorter dorsal fin — rather than on any single obvious external field mark, which is typical of recently split sibling species in this genus.
Habitat
Distichodus mbiniensis is known only from the upper Mbini River drainage in Equatorial Guinea, part of the broader West-Central African river system draining toward the Gulf of Guinea. As currently documented, it appears to be a narrow-range endemic restricted to this single river system rather than a wide-ranging Congo Basin species.
The original description does not report specific temperature or pH measurements for the type locality, and no aquarium-trade or field-husbandry record fills that gap. What can be said with confidence, based on the genus and the region, is that this is warm West-Central African river water; specific figures are not available and should not be assumed from South American or even Congo Basin data.
Feeding
Distichodus as a genus is characterised as omnivorous but strongly herbivore-leaning, with vegetable matter — algae, plant material and detritus — forming the bulk of the diet and animal protein taken opportunistically as a supplement. Nothing in the type description addresses gut contents or field feeding observations specific to D. mbiniensis, so this account follows the documented pattern for the genus rather than direct data on this species.
There is no aquarium feeding record for D. mbiniensis. A keeper working from the genus pattern would offer vegetable-forward foods — blanched greens, spirulina-based flake or pellet, and algae wafers — alongside occasional protein, but this is an inference from Distichodus generally, not a documented fact about this species.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Distichodus mbiniensis. The species was described from a small series of preserved specimens collected for taxonomic purposes, not from field or aquarium observation of live behaviour, and no subsequent study appears to have filled that gap.
Breeding
There is no record of Distichodus mbiniensis being bred in captivity, and no field account of its reproductive biology. This fits the wider pattern for the genus and for the citharinid–distichodontid group generally: Distichodus species are egg-scatterers that are only rarely bred at home even for the well-established aquarium species, and a narrow-range endemic described as recently as 2021, with essentially no aquarium-trade presence, has no breeding record to draw on.
Given the complete absence of data, this account makes no claim about clutch size, spawning trigger or parental care for this species — those details are simply not known and should not be inferred from other, better-studied Distichodus.
In the aquarium
Distichodus mbiniensis has no meaningful presence in the aquarium hobby; it was described from scientific collecting in a single Equatorial Guinean river drainage, not sourced through the ornamental trade, and there is no husbandry literature to draw on. Prospective keepers should treat any fish sold under this name with real skepticism, since correct identification within Distichodus depends on fine scale counts and fin proportions that are not practical to verify outside a specimen examination.
The one genus-level lesson worth carrying over is the size and behaviour spread within Distichodus: some species stay small and manageable while others, such as D. sexfasciatus and D. lusosso, grow toward a metre and shred aquarium plants wholesale. At a documented maximum of about 4.5 in, D. mbiniensis itself would not be a large-tank fish if it were ever available, but that is inference from its measured size, not from any actual keeping experience.
Conservation
Distichodus mbiniensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is classified here as Not Evaluated (NE). This is unsurprising for a species described only in 2021 and known from a narrow single-river range in Equatorial Guinea — recently described, geographically restricted taxa frequently lack a completed conservation assessment simply because the review process has not yet reached them.
As an apparent single-drainage endemic, D. mbiniensis would be a reasonable candidate for future concern from habitat pressures typical of West-Central African rivers — deforestation, agricultural runoff and water-quality change — but no population data, trend information or direct threat assessment currently exists to support any specific conservation status beyond Not Evaluated.
