Erythrinus cephalus is a little-documented member of the trahira, or wolf fish, group of South American characins — cylindrical, air-breathing ambush predators armed with heavy, conical teeth. Species-specific data on E. cephalus is sparse; almost everything known about its size, water preferences and habits comes from its far better-studied congener, the red wolf fish Erythrinus erythrinus, which reaches around 8 in and shares the genus's solitary, predatory lifestyle. This account leans on that congeneric picture while flagging clearly where E. cephalus itself has not been separately documented. Whatever its exact adult size, an Erythrinus is a specialist predator's fish, not a community tank resident: it will kill and eat any tankmate it can fit in its mouth.

The genus Erythrinus is distinguished from the larger-bodied Hoplias by its smaller adult size and more slender build, though field identification between congeners is difficult and historically confused, and much of the popular literature on the genus in fact describes the better-known Erythrinus erythrinus.

Species-level data specifically for E. cephalus is genuinely thin in both the scientific and aquarium literature; FishBase and general web searches return little beyond the taxonomic listing, with most substantive natural-history material attached instead to E. erythrinus. Where this article draws on that congener for size, water chemistry or behaviour, it is flagged explicitly rather than presented as species-specific fact.

Morphology

Like other trahiras, Erythrinus cephalus is expected to share the family's characteristic elongate, cylindrical body, a broad head with a large mouth, and a single row of heavy, conical, interlocking teeth built for seizing and holding prey rather than shearing it. The genus also carries an accessory air-breathing organ derived from a modified swim bladder, letting fish gulp atmospheric air and survive in oxygen-poor, still or seasonally stagnant water — a trait shared across the Erythrinidae.

No confirmed maximum-size figure specific to E. cephalus was found in the cache; the closely related E. erythrinus tops out at roughly 8 in standard length, and that figure is used here only as a genus-level reference point, not a confirmed measurement for this species. Prospective keepers should treat the true adult size of E. cephalus as unconfirmed and plan for a fish that may exceed that reference figure rather than assume it is capped there.

Habitat

Erythrinidae as a family, and the genus Erythrinus in particular, are distributed across Neotropical South America, with congener E. erythrinus recorded from the Amazon, Orinoco, Guianas and Paraguay basins. E. cephalus is presumed to occupy comparable lowland freshwater habitat within this broad range, though the cache did not return country- or basin-level occurrence records specific to this species, so its precise distribution should be treated as data sparse rather than confirmed.

Feeding

In captivity, congeneric wolf fish take meaty foods such as earthworms, prawns, mussels and whole or cut fish, and frequently refuse dry or flake foods outright.

Any tankmate offered to a fish of this genus must be judged by one standard only: is it too large to be swallowed. Feeding should center on whole or chunked meaty items rather than pellets, and keepers should expect this species, like its relatives, to largely ignore prepared foods.

Mating

A trahira of this genus needs a single-specimen setup: dim lighting, dense cover from driftwood or robust plants, and a tightly fitting lid, since these fish are reported to strike at anything introduced to the tank — including nets, hands and maintenance tools — and are capable of jumping. No compatible tankmates should be attempted; congener accounts describe single-species aquaria as the only workable arrangement, with any other fish present either eaten or subject to unpredictable, forceful strikes.

Because confirmed adult size for E. cephalus itself is not established, tank planning should err generously — sized to accommodate a genus-typical predator rather than assumed to stay small. As with all wolf fish, this is a specialist's fish: an air-breather that tolerates poor water quality better than most characins, but one that demands respect for its bite and its predatory temperament rather than casual handling.
