Taxonomy & naming
Erythrinus palustris was described by the French ichthyologist Achille Valenciennes in 1847. It belongs to the genus Erythrinus, one of three genera — alongside Hoplias and Hoplerythrinus — that make up the family Erythrinidae, the trahiras or wolf fishes, within the order Characiformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name and placement of the species; no dedicated FishBase account or recent taxonomic revision specific to E. palustris was found in the available sources.
The species epithet, palustris, is Latin for "of the marsh" or "swampy," consistent with the family's association with slow, vegetated backwaters, floodplain lakes and swamp habitats across South America. GBIF records the historical name Synodus palustris (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) as a separate synonym now linked to Hoplias malabaricus, a naming coincidence that has occasionally caused confusion between the two species — but Erythrinus palustris Valenciennes, 1847 is treated as a distinct, valid species in the genus Erythrinus.
