Taxonomy & naming
Erythrinus erythrinus was described by Marcus Elieser Bloch and Johann Gottlob Schneider in 1801, and it is the type species of the genus Erythrinus, placing it at the historical root of the family Erythrinidae — the trahiras and wolf fishes, a small group of predatory Neotropical characiforms that also includes the genera Hoplias and Hoplerythrinus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Erythrinus as a genus distinct from its heavier-bodied, often much larger relative Hoplias, though the two are frequently discussed together in the aquarium trade and in popular accounts as "wolf fish" for their shared build and predatory habits.
The genus and species names both derive from the Greek erythros, "red," a reference to the reddish tones the fish can show in life rather than to any taxonomic link with the true "red piranha" of a different family. In the hobby the species is most often sold simply as the trahira or red wolf fish; it is easily confused at a glance with young Hoplias, and reliable identification rests on body proportions and fin details rather than colour alone, which is variable.
Morphology
Erythrinus erythrinus has the classic wolf-fish silhouette: an elongated, rounded, almost torpedo-shaped body, a broad flattened head and a large mouth armed with heavy, conical, interlocking teeth built for gripping and swallowing prey rather than slicing it. FishBase records a maximum of about 8 in standard length, with occasional reports to around 10 in — modest for the family compared with the metre-plus Hoplias aimara, but still a substantial, thickset predator relative to typical community aquarium fish.
Colouration is variable and can run from olive-brown to reddish-bronze along the flanks, often with darker mottling or blotching that provides camouflage against submerged vegetation and leaf litter. Like other erythrinids, it has a single dorsal fin set well back on the body and no adipose fin, and its swim bladder is modified to function as an accessory air-breathing organ, letting it gulp atmospheric oxygen at the surface — a trait shared with its close relatives and essential to its ability to survive in poorly oxygenated, stagnant water.
Habitat
The species is native to the Amazon and Orinoco basins and the Guianas, where FishBase and occurrence records place it across small tributaries, swamps, marshes and shallow, vegetated margins rather than open river channels. These habitats are often warm, slow-moving or stagnant and prone to seasonal oxygen depletion, which is precisely the environment its air-breathing capability is adapted for: it can persist in water too poor in dissolved oxygen for most fish by surfacing to gulp air.
Water conditions across its range run warm and soft to moderately acidic, broadly around 72–79 °F and pH 5.6–7.8 per FishBase, with Seriously Fish citing a similar 72–79 °F and pH 5.5–7.5. Feeding
Erythrinus erythrinus is a dedicated piscivore and an ambush predator, not a grazer or scavenger. In the wild it takes small fish and insects, striking from cover with a short, explosive lunge rather than pursuing prey over distance. Seriously Fish notes it as carnivorous and specifically willing to take earthworms, prawns, mussels and whitebait-type fish, but generally unwilling to accept dry or flake foods, which are not a realistic diet for this species.
In the aquarium it should be fed meaty, appropriately sized whole or chunked foods — fish, prawn, mussel — and any tankmate must be considered potential prey unless it is unambiguously too large to be swallowed. Feeding response is typically fast and forceful given the species' fearless, predatory temperament.
Mating
Detailed courtship behaviour for Erythrinus erythrinus specifically is not well documented in the available literature, and the cache used for this article does not describe a distinct courtship display. What is documented, and important for anyone considering breeding this fish, is that several species within the wolf-fish group (Erythrinus and Hoplias) are substrate nest-spawners in which a male excavates or claims a pit or a patch among plants and then guards it; pairing behaviour in this group is generally understood to precede spawning at such a site rather than any open-water courtship display.
FishBase notes that captive breeding of E. erythrinus has not been reliably reported since early in the twentieth century, and it is widely regarded as difficult to breed in aquaria — a fish for which reproductive behaviour has simply not been observed and documented in captivity in the modern era.
Breeding
Erythrinus erythrinus is not established in the aquarium trade as a captive-bred species. FishBase specifically notes that breeding in captivity has not been reliably reported since 1910, and Seriously Fish likewise states it has not been successfully bred in the hobby. Where breeding data exists for the broader wolf-fish group, several Hoplias and Erythrinus species are known as substrate nest-spawners, with a male clearing and guarding a pit or plant nest and defending the eggs and fry, but this mode has not been confirmed for E. erythrinus itself under aquarium conditions.
Given the species' extreme intolerance of conspecifics — Seriously Fish describes fatal aggression between individuals housed together — pairing two specimens safely enough to spawn is itself a significant obstacle, and prospective breeders should treat this as an unresolved, high-difficulty proposition rather than a routine project. Data on egg count, incubation time and fry-rearing is not available and should not be guessed at.
In the aquarium
Erythrinus erythrinus is a solitary predator that must be kept as such. Seriously Fish is explicit that the species shows extreme intolerance toward its own kind, with conflicts between conspecifics that can be fatal, so a single specimen per tank is the only safe approach — this is not a shoaling or even a loosely social fish. At a maximum of roughly 8 in it does not need the vast footprint that a metre-long Hoplias demands, but it is still a large-mouthed, heavily toothed predator that will treat any tankmate small enough to swallow as food, and even similarly sized fish risk serious injury from its bite.
A tank for this species should offer dense planting or driftwood for ambush cover, a tight-fitting lid (it can be a capable jumper, as many air-breathing predatory characiforms are), and warm, soft, mildly acidic water in the 72–79 °F, pH 5.6–7.8 range. Because it is an obligate air-breather that relies on surface access, the tank must never be sealed in a way that blocks it from reaching the surface. It refuses dry food and should be fed a varied, meaty diet of fish, prawn and mussel. This is a specialist's fish — a solitary predator display animal, not a community tankmate — and its fearless demeanour and sharp dentition warrant careful handling at every water change and maintenance session.
Conservation
FishBase records an IUCN Red List assessment of Least Concern for Erythrinus erythrinus, dated 2020, reflecting its wide distribution across the Amazon, Orinoco and Guianas basins and the absence of documented range-wide population decline. It is not a species of particular conservation concern at present.
As with many small, widely distributed Neotropical fish of little commercial fisheries importance, detailed population trend data is limited, and the species' conservation status should be read as a reflection of its broad range and lack of known major threats rather than the product of intensive targeted study. It appears in the aquarium trade in modest numbers as a wild-collected predator fish rather than as a farmed or commercially bred species.
