Taxonomy & naming
Erythrinus trahira was described by the German naturalist Johann Baptist von Spix (with Louis Agassiz completing and publishing much of Spix's Brazilian fish material) in 1829, from material collected in Brazil. It sits in the family Erythrinidae — the trahiras and wolf fishes — within the characiform order, alongside the genera Hoplias and Hoplerythrinus. Erythrinidae as a whole is defined by a cylindrical, non-compressed body, a large mouth armed with strong conical teeth, and an accessory air-breathing organ, all adaptations to life as an ambush predator in oxygen-poor floodplain and swamp water.
The genus Erythrinus and the species-level nomenclature within Erythrinidae have a complicated history: older literature and some occurrence databases have at times treated Erythrinus trahira as close to, or confused with, species now placed in Hoplias, and the genus is frequently discussed alongside the much better-documented Erythrinus erythrinus, with which it shares its common name "wolf fish" and much of its biology. The closely related Erythrinus erythrinus tops out at roughly 8–10 in SL, and it is reasonable to expect E. trahira to fall in a broadly similar range, but that figure should be treated as an informed proxy, not a confirmed measurement — this is stated here rather than guessed at with false precision.

Erythrinus trahira is native to South America, with records associated with Brazil; as with much of its biology, precise range and habitat detail specific to this species is not well documented in the sources available. Erythrinus trahira is a piscivore, and the trahiras and wolf fish as a group are documented as nocturnal, voracious ambush hunters — they lie in wait among cover and strike explosively at passing prey rather than chasing it down in open water. Adults of related species feed predominantly on fish, while juveniles take crustaceans and insect larvae before graduating to a fish-based diet.
In the aquarium, meaty foods — whole fish, prawn, earthworm and similar — are the appropriate diet for this genus; related Erythrinus species are documented as reluctant to take dry or flake food. Any tankmate must be too large to be swallowed whole, and even then should be regarded as at risk, since this is an opportunistic predator rather than a fish that can be trained to ignore live tankmates.

Erythrinids are noted as strong escape artists and confirmed air-breathers, so a tightly sealed, secure lid is essential — a trahira left with an opening will find it.
Given the sparse size data for this species, keepers should plan tank dimensions generously and be prepared to upgrade as the fish grows, rather than assuming it will stay small. Provide dense cover — driftwood, roots, dim lighting — to give this naturally ambush-oriented fish a place to sit and wait, mimicking the still, vegetated floodplain water it is adapted to. Feed meaty, whole-prey-style foods; do not expect reliable acceptance of dried foods. As with any large-jawed piscivore, handle with a container rather than a net, and do not expect this to become a trainable, hand-friendly "pet" fish — it remains a predator throughout its life.
Conservation
