Eugnathichthys eetveldii is a slender, mid-sized African characin from the Congo River basin, and it belongs to a small, specialised guild of fishes that make their living biting fins and scales off other fish. It is not a plant-grazing Distichodus cousin content to browse algae — stomach and jaw studies place it and its close relatives among the true pterygophages, characins whose jaws are built to shear off heavily ossified fin-rays and scales from prey many times their own size, then move on rather than kill outright. Taxonomy & naming

Eugnathichthys eetveldii was described by the Belgian-based ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898, placing it in the genus Eugnathichthys within the family Distichodontidae, order Characiformes. The Distichodontidae are an African family closely related to the citharinids, distinguished from South American characins by a mix of jaw and scale characters, and Eugnathichthys is one of several genera within it that have evolved specialised, fin- and scale-eating dentition rather than the plant- or algae-grazing habit typical of the better-known genus Distichodus.

The species epithet honours Stanislas Marie Léon Edmond van Eetvelde (1852-1925), a Belgian diplomat and colonial administrator active in the Congo Free State during the era when much of the material underpinning Boulenger's Congo basin descriptions was collected. As with many Congo basin characins described around the turn of the twentieth century, taxonomic revision of the genus has continued since; a 2015 molecular and morphological treatment (Zootaxa) revisited Eugnathichthys and confirmed both its Congo basin distribution and its distinctive ectoparasitic, fin-eating biology, but did not require a change to this species' generic placement.

Morphology

Eugnathichthys eetveldii is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed characin reaching a maximum recorded length of about 11.5 in total length, a respectable size for a Distichodontidae that is easy to underestimate from photographs of juveniles in the trade. Like other pterygophagous distichodontids, its jaws and dentition are the functional heart of its biology: rather than the flattened, grazing tooth rows of Distichodus, Eugnathichthys carries teeth and jaw musculature adapted to grip and shear the heavily ossified, bony rays found at the leading edge of another fish's fins, and in some cases scales as well.

Detailed published descriptions of external colouration for this species are limited in the available literature, and this article does not assert specific colour or fin-shape details beyond what is documented: a typical distichodontid silhouette (elongate body, forked caudal fin, terminal mouth) built around that specialised, fin-shearing bite.
