Taxonomy & naming
Hepsetus kingsleyae was described in 2013 by Emmanuel Vreven, Auguste Chocha Manda and Jos Snoeks (with Auguste Decru as a lead co-author on the revision) as part of a taxonomic review of the Lower Guinean Hepsetus populations, published in the Journal of Fish Biology. Before that revision, essentially all African pike characins were lumped into the single wide-ranging species Hepsetus odoe; the 2013 paper split out the populations of the Ogowe and neighbouring Lower Guinean drainages as a distinct species on the basis of consistent morphological differences. The genus Hepsetus is the sole genus in the family Hepsetidae, within the order Characiformes, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises it as the current authority on the valid species boundaries within the genus.
The type locality is the lower Ogowe River basin in Gabon (00°41.93'S, 10°10.05'E), and the species epithet kingsleyae honours Mary Kingsley (1862–1900), the English explorer and travel writer who journeyed extensively through West-Central Africa, including the Ogowe region, and wrote influential accounts of the area's peoples and natural history. As with its relatives, H. kingsleyae is easily mistaken in the field and in the trade for other Hepsetus species and forms; reliable identification rests on the diagnostic characters set out in the 2013 revision rather than on general appearance alone.
Morphology
Hepsetus kingsleyae has the unmistakable pike-characin body plan: an elongated, only mildly compressed body, a long, flattened head with an upturned mouth, and a single dorsal fin set well back toward the tail, giving the fish a superficial resemblance to a true pike despite the two being unrelated. The jaws carry a row of sharp, closely spaced, interlocking teeth suited to seizing and holding slippery prey rather than shearing flesh in the manner of a piranha.
Detailed size and meristic data specific to H. kingsleyae are not well documented in the sources available for this account. Pike characins are solitary, strongly predatory fish that do not shoal and that will treat any tankmate small enough to swallow as food — a large, heavily planted or driftwood-furnished tank with a single specimen (or, cautiously, a conditioned breeding pair) is the realistic approach, not a community setup.
Given the genus's maximum size of around 17.5 in, a long-term home needs real floor space and length, not just water volume, and the fish should never be assumed to stay small. Diet must be meaty whole or filleted fish and prawn rather than commercial flake or pellet. As with any predatory ambush fish, cover in the form of driftwood and dense planting reduces stress and lets the fish express natural behaviour instead of pacing a bare tank.
