Hepsetus microlepis is a Congo-basin member of the small African pike-characin genus Hepsetus — an elongated, torpedo-shaped ambush predator whose family, Hepsetidae, converges on the unrelated northern pikes (Esox) in both body plan and hunting style. It reaches a modest but respectable maximum of around 12 in standard length, hangs motionless in cover along vegetated margins, and lunges at passing prey with a mouth full of sharp, interlocking teeth. It is not a fish for a community tank of small tetras and rasboras — it is a solitary piscivore that needs space, dim cover and fish too large to eat, and it is rare enough in the trade that most of what is written about the genus's care and breeding actually comes from the better-documented type species, H. odoe. This article states plainly where the record is thin for H. microlepis specifically.

Hepsetus microlepis was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1901. It belongs to the family Hepsetidae — the African pike-characins — a small family long treated as monotypic (a single genus, Hepsetus) within the order Characiformes, and only recognised as containing more than one valid species after later taxonomic revision split the genus by locality and scale counts; H. microlepis is one of the resulting valid species alongside the more widely known Hepsetus odoe. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the reference point for the currently accepted genus and species-level arrangement, and this account follows it without attempting to re-derive or second-guess that placement.

The genus name Hepsetus derives from the ancient Greek for a kind of predatory fish, an apt label for an ambush hunter with a mouthful of sharp teeth; the species epithet microlepis is Greek for "small-scaled" (mikros, small + lepis, scale), distinguishing it from congeners on scale-count grounds. Hepsetidae's superficial resemblance to the true pikes of the Northern Hemisphere — elongated body, dorsal fin set far back near the tail, large gape — is a case of convergent evolution rather than close relationship; the two groups are not closely related despite the shared "pike" common name and silhouette.

This places it firmly within Congolese and Central African river drainages rather than the Niger, Nile or southern African systems used by some other African characins.

Across its range it occupies the vegetated, structurally complex margins of rivers and connected floodplain habitats typical of Congo-basin lowland freshwater systems — warm, tropical water with cover from submerged wood, roots and marginal plants that an ambush predator depends on for concealment. This species is rare in the aquarium trade compared with the better-known Hepsetus odoe, and published, species-specific care reports are limited; much of what circulates about "Hepsetus care" in hobbyist sources describes the genus or H. odoe rather than H. microlepis directly, and this account is careful not to present that material as confirmed for this species.
