Hepsetus occidentalis is the westernmost member of the African pike-characins, a small genus of long-bodied, sharp-toothed ambush predators that fill something close to the ecological role South American wolf fish and North American pikes fill on their own continents. Described only in 2013, when a revision of the genus split what had been lumped as a single wide-ranging "Hepsetus odoe" into several geographically distinct species, H. occidentalis is native to a band of West African river systems running from the Senegal River west to the Cavally River on the Ivory Coast. It is a lurking predator built for a single fast strike from cover, not a fish that chases, and its honest adult size — pushing 15.5 in — plus a genuinely interesting foam-nest breeding strategy make it a distinctive, if under-documented, choice for a keeper prepared to give a large predator the tank it needs.

Taxonomy & naming

Hepsetus occidentalis was described by Decru, Snoeks and Vreven in 2013 as part of a taxonomic revision that broke up the genus Hepsetus, previously treated as containing a single widespread species, Hepsetus odoe, across most of tropical Africa. Morphological and molecular work showed that populations in the far western part of that range — roughly from the Senegal River basin west to the Cavally River in Ivory Coast — were consistently distinct from H. odoe populations further east and south, and these western populations, some of which had long been misidentified in the literature simply as H. odoe, were formally separated out as H. occidentalis.

The genus Hepsetus sits alone in the family Hepsetidae, within the order Characiformes; it is not closely related to the true pikes (Esociformes) despite a strikingly convergent body plan, and it is separated from the much larger Serrasalmidae (piranhas, pacus, silver dollars) by that long, cylindrical, pike-like body and a single row of large, sharp, conical teeth rather than the piranhas' blade-like tricuspid dentition. The species epithet occidentalis is Latin for "western," describing its position as the westernmost species in the genus.

Morphology

Hepsetus occidentalis has the elongated, torpedo-shaped body typical of the genus: a long, only moderately compressed body, a pointed head with a large, upturned mouth armed with prominent, sharp, interlocking teeth, and dorsal and anal fins set well back toward the tail, close to the caudal fin — a classic ambush-predator silhouette built for a short, explosive burst rather than sustained cruising. FishBase records a maximum published length of 15.5 in total length for the species, a genuinely large size for a characin and one that should set expectations for tank size from the outset.

Colouration is cryptic rather than showy: olive to brownish along the back shading to silvery flanks and a pale belly, often with faint dark blotching or barring that breaks up its outline against submerged vegetation and root tangles. This is a fish built to disappear against structure while it waits for prey, not to be seen — its appeal in the aquarium is behavioural and structural rather than colourful.

Habitat

Hepsetus occidentalis is native to freshwater river systems of West Africa, with a range running from the Senegal River in Senegal west to the Cavally River on the Ivory Coast — making it the westernmost of the Hepsetus species and geographically separate from H. odoe populations to the east. Within these systems it occupies benthopelagic habitat in vegetated stretches of rivers and associated floodplain and marginal waters, where dense aquatic plants and submerged structure give it cover to lurk in ambush.

Detailed water-chemistry data specific to H. occidentalis is sparse in the available literature, but as with other West African river characins the species can be expected to experience warm tropical conditions with a seasonal flood pulse; keepers should treat any numeric temperature and pH figures as a general West African-river starting point rather than a species-specific measurement until more targeted data becomes available.

Feeding

Hepsetus occidentalis is a specialised carnivorous ambush predator. Documented diet for the genus centres on fish, particularly cichlids and mormyrids (elephantfishes), with smaller individuals also taking mochokid catfishes; the sharp, interlocking teeth are a clear anatomical signal of a piscivorous specialist rather than a generalist feeder. Hunting is passive rather than pursuit-based — the fish lies motionless in aquatic vegetation, relying on camouflage, and strikes explosively when prey passes within range, rather than chasing food across open water.

In the aquarium this translates to a fish that should be fed appropriately sized whole prey items or high-quality carnivore foods rather than flake or vegetable-based diets, and that will treat any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth as food. Feeding behaviour and tank design should lean into the ambush strategy — cover to lurk in, and prey-sized fish kept elsewhere.

Mating

Detailed courtship behaviour specific to Hepsetus occidentalis has not been documented in the literature reviewed here; data is sparse for this recently described species. Breeding behaviour for the genus Hepsetus, best documented in the more widely studied H. odoe, centres on a breeding season with pair formation ahead of nest construction, and it is reasonable to expect a broadly similar pattern in H. occidentalis given the close relationship between the species, though this should not be treated as confirmed for H. occidentalis specifically until directly studied.

External sexual dimorphism has not been documented for this species in the sources reviewed; data is sparse, and keepers should not assume a reliable visual method for sexing individuals.

Breeding

The genus Hepsetus is distinctive among African characins for building a floating foam nest rather than scattering eggs. In the best-studied congener, H. odoe, breeding runs roughly August to January, and a female may produce upwards of 6,000 eggs, which are placed into a free-floating foam nest constructed by the male among aquatic vegetation. The male then guards the nest and the resulting fry, chasing off intruders, retrieving fallen eggs or fry, and maintaining the nest structure until the juveniles disperse into vegetated marginal habitat roughly four days after hatching.

This foam-nest strategy, with male parental care, is a genus-level trait and is the pattern to expect in H. occidentalis, though direct breeding observations specific to this species are not documented in the sources reviewed here. The species is not known to be bred in the aquarium hobby or commercially at any scale; anyone attempting it should expect to be working from the H. odoe pattern rather than species-specific guidance.

In the aquarium

Hepsetus occidentalis is a large, strictly predatory fish and is not a community-tank candidate. At close to 15.5 in total length, it needs a long, spacious aquarium well beyond entry-level dimensions, with dense planting or driftwood cover it can use to lurk and ambush, open swimming space, and robust filtration to handle a predator's bioload. It is best kept alone or with tankmates too large to be viewed as prey — anything that fits in its mouth should be assumed to become a meal.

As an ambush predator rather than an active hunter, it does not need or want a bare, brightly lit tank; recreate the vegetated, structure-rich West African river margins it comes from. Feed appropriately sized whole prey or quality carnivore foods rather than flake. This is a specialist fish for a keeper with the space and commitment for a large, long-lived predator, not an impulse purchase, and given how sparse aquarium-specific husbandry data is for this particular species, keepers should proceed cautiously and be prepared to adapt care from the better-known H. odoe.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Hepsetus occidentalis as Least Concern, with the most recent assessment dated 2020, and no documented population decline. This reflects a fish with a reasonably wide distribution across West African river systems from the Senegal to the Cavally, without the acute, localized pressures that drive concern for many narrow-range African freshwater fish.

As with many West African river species, broader regional pressures — damming, water abstraction, deforestation-linked sedimentation and water-quality change — are long-term watch items across its range even though the species is not currently considered threatened. The aquarium trade does not appear to be a significant pressure on wild populations; this is not a commonly traded aquarium fish.
