Taxonomy & naming
Hepsetus lineatus was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1926. It belongs to the small family Hepsetidae — the African pike characins — within the order Characiformes, a family that for a long time was treated as containing a single wide-ranging species, Hepsetus odoe, before later revision split the genus into several geographically distinct species. Hepsetus lineatus is the Lower Guinea and Congo-basin representative of the genus, while Hepsetus odoe is now understood to occupy a different, more northerly and westerly range (including Nigeria); the two are easily confused in older literature and in the aquarium trade, where fish are still sometimes sold simply as "Hepsetus" or under the odoe name regardless of actual provenance.
The genus name Hepsetus derives from the Greek for a small predatory fish, reflecting the pike-like hunting style shared by all species in the family; the species epithet lineatus ("lined" or "striped") refers to the dark longitudinal striping and speckled patterning along the flanks. The family's closest relatives within the Characiformes are debated, but its distinctive elongated body plan and floating-nest breeding behaviour set it apart from the deep-bodied Distichodontidae and Citharinidae that share its African rivers.
Morphology
Hepsetus lineatus has an unmistakably pike-like body: elongated and roughly cylindrical, with a long, flattened head and a large mouth armed with numerous sharp, backward-curving teeth built for gripping and holding slippery prey rather than shearing flesh like a piranha's. The dorsal fin sits far back on the body, close to the tail, mirroring the fin placement of true pikes and reinforcing the same ambush hunting strategy — a rearward dorsal and anal fin let the fish deliver a fast, powerful strike from a standing start. FishBase records a maximum published length of 11 in standard length, making this a substantial predatory fish rather than a small community species.
Colouration is cryptic and functional: an olive-to-brown or greenish-tan body marked with dark longitudinal lines and irregular speckling along the flanks, breaking up the fish's outline against submerged vegetation and providing effective camouflage for an ambush predator that relies on stealth rather than pursuit. The overall silhouette, mottled patterning and terminal, tooth-lined jaw make Hepsetus instantly recognisable even to keepers unfamiliar with African characins, and the resemblance to a true pike (a different family entirely, native to the Northern Hemisphere) is a frequently noted case of convergent evolution.
Habitat
Hepsetus lineatus is native to Lower Guinea and Congo-basin drainages of west-central Africa, documented from Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Confirmed river systems include the Dja, Sanaga, Nyong and Ntem in Cameroon; the Ogowe and Nyanga in Gabon; the Kouilou-Niari and Shiloango in the Republic of the Congo; and the Chiloango, Congo and Sangha basins in the DRC. This places the species firmly in the warm rivers, floodplains and tributaries of west-central Africa rather than in the Nile or West African (Niger/Volta/Senegal) systems occupied by other genera in this atlas.
Within these rivers, Hepsetus lineatus favours quiet, well-vegetated margins — backwaters, flooded vegetation and slow-moving stretches with cover — where it can lie in wait for prey. As an ambush predator it depends on structure: dense marginal plants, submerged roots and overhanging vegetation give it both concealment and a platform for its distinctive floating nest (see "Breeding"). Specific published water-chemistry figures for this species were not found in the sources consulted here; keepers should assume warm, typically soft-to-moderate, often tannin-influenced Lower Guinea river conditions consistent with the wider region, and err toward stability over precision.
Feeding
Hepsetus lineatus is an obligate predator with a trophic level around 3.0, consistent with a fish that feeds primarily on other fish rather than on plant matter, detritus or a broad omnivorous mix. In the wild it hunts by ambush, lying motionless among vegetation and striking at smaller fish that stray within range, gripping prey with its numerous sharp teeth rather than slicing it as a piranha would. This single-minded predatory habit is the defining fact for anyone considering the species for an aquarium: it is not a fish that can be kept with anything small enough to swallow.
In captivity, Hepsetus is typically weaned onto dead and prepared foods — whole fish, fish fillet, prawn and similar meaty items — though newly acquired specimens can be reluctant feeders that initially accept only live or freshly killed fish. Feeder fish are best avoided as a staple diet on general welfare and disease-risk grounds; a varied diet of appropriately sized whole fish and other meaty foods is the better long-term approach once the fish is established.
Mating
Documented accounts of courtship in Hepsetus focus on the lead-up to nest construction rather than an extended pairing display: a conditioned pair comes together near the water's surface among floating or marginal vegetation, and spawning is associated with a rise in water temperature, cited around 73–75 °F, that appears to act as a trigger. As in many characins, reliable external sexual dimorphism is not well documented for this species, and pairs are generally identified by behaviour — a male and female associating closely near a nest site — rather than by a consistent visual difference between the sexes.
What is distinctive about Hepsetus courtship is where it leads: rather than clearing a substrate site as piranhas do, the pair works at the surface to construct a floating nest, described in the next section. This surface-oriented, foam-nest strategy is unusual among the characins covered in this atlas and is one of the clearest identifying behavioural traits of the genus.
Breeding
Hepsetus lineatus builds a floating foam, or bubble, nest among surface and marginal vegetation — a breeding strategy shared across the genus and quite different from the substrate-spawning piranhas, the migratory pacus, or the egg-scattering silver dollars and Distichodus also covered in this atlas. The male constructs a thick nest of bubbles at the water's surface, anchored among plants, and the pair spawns into it; a single spawn can run into the thousands of adhesive eggs, which are held within the foam mass.
The male guards the nest and the eggs within it, and the fry that hatch remain clustered at the nest for roughly four days, sustained by their yolk sac, before dispersing to begin free-swimming and feeding. This combination of a floating bubble nest and dedicated male guarding is the headline breeding fact for the species: set facts.breeding.mode accordingly, and note that it is a genuinely distinctive strategy among the world's characins, more reminiscent of a gourami or betta than of a typical characiform egg-scatterer.
In the aquarium
Hepsetus lineatus is a large, strictly predatory fish and needs to be sized and stocked accordingly: sources recommend an aquarium of at least 150 US gallons (roughly 150 US gal) for an adult, with dense marginal or floating vegetation to satisfy its need for ambush cover and well-oxygenated water reflecting its origin in flowing or well-aerated river margins. This is a solitary or near-solitary predator in temperament, not a shoaling fish, and it should not be housed with anything small enough to be viewed as prey — tankmates, if attempted at all, need to be robust, fast, and clearly too large to swallow.
Because it is an ambush hunter reliant on cover, a bare or brightly lit tank is a poor fit; dense planting, floating vegetation and subdued lighting better match its natural behaviour and will also support a spawning attempt if a compatible pair is conditioned together. Given its predatory jaw and readiness to strike, handling should be done with care, and — as with any large, unusual predatory fish — a keeper should confirm the fish is legal to own locally before acquiring one, since large piscivorous species can attract the same regulatory scrutiny as piranhas in some jurisdictions.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Hepsetus lineatus as Least Concern, reflecting a wide distribution across multiple river systems in Lower Guinea and the Congo basin with no major identified threats to the species as a whole. This is a reassuring status for a fish that is not heavily targeted by the aquarium trade and that occupies a broad enough range of rivers across Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo and the DRC to buffer against localised pressure in any single system.
That said, the general threats facing Lower Guinea and Congo-basin freshwater habitats — deforestation-linked sedimentation, water-quality degradation and, in some areas, damming — remain long-term watch items for the region's freshwater fish generally, even where a given species is not currently classed as threatened. As with many African characins in this atlas, Hepsetus lineatus is a case where the taxonomy (and therefore the true extent of any single species' range) has been clarified only relatively recently, which is itself a reason to treat any conservation picture as provisional pending further study.
