Taxonomy & naming
Hypomasticus despaxi was described by the French ichthyologist Jean Puyo in 1943, originally placed in the large genus Leporinus. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family named for the oblique, head-down feeding posture many of its members adopt while grazing. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the current combination: Hypomasticus was resurrected and redefined as a distinct genus separate from Leporinus, and H. despaxi was moved into it along with a number of other small-bodied, superficially similar species; older literature and some aggregator records still list it under its historical name, Leporinus despaxi.
The species is restricted to the coastal river drainages of the Guianas, a relatively narrow range that has kept it out of the mainstream aquarium trade compared to the larger, more widely distributed Leporinus species. Confirmed occurrence and museum specimen data (including a voucher from the Lawa River in Suriname) support both its distribution and the Puyo 1943 authority.
Morphology
Like other headstanders, Hypomasticus despaxi has an elongated, moderately compressed body built for holding position in current rather than for speed, with a small, subterminal-to-slightly-downturned mouth adapted for scraping algae and biofilm from hard surfaces. FishBase records a maximum length of 6.5 in total length, making it one of the smaller members of the family — a genuinely aquarium-sized fish rather than one of the large Leporinus species that outgrow home tanks.
The common name "striped headstander" points to a longitudinal stripe pattern along the flank, typical of the smaller Hypomasticus/Leporinus-group species, though detailed colour-pattern descriptions were not available from the sources consulted here. As with most anostomids, sexes are not reliably distinguished by external colour or fin shape.
Habitat
Hypomasticus despaxi is native to the coastal river systems of French Guiana, from the Maroni to the Oyapock, and extends into neighbouring Suriname, where a museum specimen from the Lawa River confirms its presence. Within these drainages, adults are found upstream in rapidly flowing water — a habitat consistent with its grazing lifestyle, since current keeps rock and wood surfaces clear of silt and rich in the algal film and biofilm the species feeds on.

Feeding
Hypomasticus despaxi is a grazer and aufwuchs feeder, working over submerged wood and stone in a head-down posture to rasp off algae, biofilm and the small invertebrates living within it. This feeding style is the defining trait of the headstander group and shapes both its mouth structure and its need for current-washed surfaces to graze on in the wild.
In the aquarium, a diet built around vegetable matter is appropriate — spirulina- or algae-based wafers and pellets, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach) and some fibrous foods — supplemented with a modest amount of protein such as small live or frozen invertebrates. Like many algae-grazing anostomids, it may also pick at soft aquarium plants if vegetable food is in short supply, so its diet should be treated as a genuine care requirement rather than an afterthought.
Mating
No detailed courtship description for Hypomasticus despaxi was found in the sources consulted. FishBase notes that distinct pairs of the species breed in densely vegetated, weedy areas, which points to a paired rather than group-spawning strategy, but specific behavioural detail — courtship displays, triggers, or sexual dimorphism — is not documented in the available literature. Breeding
Hypomasticus despaxi is understood to be an egg-scatterer, in keeping with the breeding pattern documented across the headstander group, and it is rarely if ever bred in home aquaria. FishBase's note that pairs breed in densely weedy places suggests eggs are scattered or deposited among fine vegetation rather than guarded at a fixed nest site, but no aquarium or hatchery breeding accounts for this specific species were found.
There is no evidence of parental care in this species or its close relatives, consistent with the scattering strategy typical of Anostomidae. Prospective breeders should expect this to be a genuinely difficult, poorly documented species to spawn in captivity rather than a routine project.
In the aquarium
At a maximum size of around 6.5 in, Hypomasticus despaxi is a modestly sized headstander that stays well within reach of a large community aquarium, unlike some of its bigger Leporinus and Anostomus relatives that can exceed 12–15.5 in and become genuinely boisterous with age. That said, its genus-mates have a well-earned reputation for territoriality and fin-nipping, particularly as they mature, so this species should be approached with the same caution: provide strong water flow, driftwood and rock surfaces to graze on, and avoid slow-moving, delicate tankmates that could be targeted.
Because it is a grazer by nature, a tank without enough algae or biofilm to work on should have its diet supplemented directly (see Feeding) — an underfed grazer is far more likely to turn to nipping fins or shredding soft plants. Given its narrow native range in the Guianas and its rarity in the trade, availability is limited and any specimens offered for sale are very likely wild-collected rather than farmed.
Conservation
Hypomasticus despaxi is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, with an assessment dated December 2020. This reflects its persistence across a defined but multi-river range in the Guianas coastal drainages (French Guiana and Suriname) rather than any evidence of a large or intensively studied population.
As a narrow-range, non-commercial species with only a small footprint in the aquarium trade, it faces no known major threats documented in the sources reviewed, though broader pressures on Guianas freshwater systems — small-scale mining, deforestation and associated sedimentation — are relevant long-term watch items for the region's rivers generally, even where they are not specifically documented for this species.
