Taxonomy & naming
Hypomasticus santanai was described by Birindelli & Melo in 2020, in a paper published in Copeia (108(2):416-425), based on a holotype (MZUEL 18604, 8 in standard length) collected from the Rio Gongogi, a tributary of the Rio de Contas in Bahia state, eastern Brazil. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Hypomasticus — a group of anostomids distinguished from the closely related Leporinus by details of dentition and scale counts rather than by any obvious difference in body plan or habit.
The species epithet honours Edson Santana, a technician at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade Estadual de Londrina (MZUEL), recognising his contribution to the museum's fish collections. Hypomasticus santanai is known only from its type locality and immediately surrounding stretches of the Rio Gongogi, making it a narrow-range coastal-drainage endemic in a part of Brazil where several other anostomids have similarly restricted distributions.
Morphology
The original description characterises Hypomasticus santanai by a downturned, subterminal mouth with compressed teeth arranged side by side — the classic headstander dental arrangement for scraping aufwuchs from hard surfaces — along with 37 to 38 lateral-line scales, three scale rows between the dorsal-fin origin and the lateral line, and 12 scale rows around the caudal peduncle. The holotype measures 8 in standard length, giving a reasonably reliable indication of adult size for the species: a modestly built, elongate anostomid in the same general size class as many better-known Leporinus and Hypomasticus species, not a giant.
As in other members of the genus, the body is elongate and only moderately compressed, with the mouth and jaw structure the most diagnostic external feature. Detailed colour-in-life description is not part of the readily available record for this species; data sparse beyond the counts and proportions given in the type description.
Habitat
Hypomasticus santanai is known only from the Rio Gongogi within the Rio de Contas basin, a coastal drainage in eastern Bahia that empties independently into the Atlantic rather than draining into the Amazon or Paraná systems. The type series was collected from clear water over rapids with a sandy-to-rocky bottom, including stretches of exposed bedrock colonised by Podostemaceae (river-weed, a family of flowering plants specialised for growing attached to rock in fast current) and fringed by marginal macrophytes.
That combination — clear, well-oxygenated, flowing water over hard substrate with a mat of attached vegetation — is exactly the kind of habitat that supports algae and biofilm growth, the food base for a grazing headstander. Coastal Bahia drainages of this kind are small by South American standards and are increasingly affected by deforestation, agricultural runoff and water abstraction, which is directly relevant to the species' narrow range and threatened status.
Feeding
Hypomasticus santanai is a grazer in the anostomid mould: it forages head-down at an oblique angle, using its compressed, side-by-side teeth to rasp algae and biofilm (collectively, aufwuchs) from rock and bedrock surfaces, picking up small invertebrates in the process. The genus-level pattern documented for headstanders generally is a mixed diet of algae, biofilm, soft plant material and incidental invertebrates rather than a hunting or scavenging strategy.
No species-specific dietary study is available for Hypomasticus santanai beyond this general anostomid pattern and its evident habitat association with rock surfaces bearing Podostemaceae. In captivity, headstanders of this type are generally fed a vegetable-forward diet — algae wafers, blanched vegetables and spirulina-based foods — supplemented with occasional protein such as small invertebrates or quality flake, and they will graze soft aquarium plants if not given enough of the former.
Mating
No courtship or pairing behaviour has been documented specifically for Hypomasticus santanai; the species was described from preserved museum material collected during faunal surveys, not observed live in the field or in captivity. Data sparse.
For headstanders as a group, hobby and aquaculture accounts describe pair formation preceding spawning, with conditioning on live or frozen foods and a rise in temperature associated with triggering readiness, but detailed, reliable accounts are scarce even for the better-known genera. No external sexual dimorphism has been reported for this species.
Breeding
Hypomasticus santanai has no documented breeding record, in the wild or in captivity — unsurprising for a species described only in 2020 from a single river system and never established in the aquarium trade. Anostomid headstanders as a family are generally understood to be egg-scatterers, and captive breeding across the group is rare and largely unplanned even for widely kept Leporinus and Anostomus species; there is no parental care once eggs are released.
Given the complete absence of species-specific data, nothing further can honestly be said about this species' reproductive biology beyond the family-level pattern. Any aquarist encountering breeding activity in a headstander of this genus would be documenting new information.
In the aquarium
Hypomasticus santanai is not established in the aquarium trade — it has no known common name and, as a narrow-range Endangered endemic described only recently, is not a species anyone should expect to find offered for sale, nor one that should be collected from the wild for the hobby. This account is included for completeness and because its genus relatives do occasionally appear in specialist circles.
Were it ever kept, the type-locality habitat gives useful guidance: a headstander from clear, flowing, well-oxygenated water over rock and sand, adapted to grazing hard surfaces, would need strong current, high dissolved oxygen, algae-covered rock or driftwood to graze, and a vegetable-rich diet. Anostomids in general — including many Leporinus and Anostomus species — are known fin-nippers and become territorial with age and size, so this genus should not be assumed docile; the type specimen's 8 in standard length indicates a mid-sized fish that would need a correspondingly sized tank, not a nano setup.
Conservation
Hypomasticus santanai is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Endangered, a status driven by its extremely small extent of occurrence, a population confined to a single small coastal river system (the Rio Gongogi within the Rio de Contas basin), and ongoing habitat decline in that drainage. Coastal Bahia rivers of this size are especially vulnerable to deforestation, agricultural runoff, water abstraction and impoundment, all of which degrade the clear, rock-bottomed, fast-flowing habitat this species depends on.
With no wild population estimate and no aquarium trade presence, the species' fate is tied entirely to the condition of the Rio Gongogi and neighbouring stretches of the Rio de Contas basin. As with many recently described, single-river endemics, its conservation outlook depends on habitat protection in a region without the scale of formal reserve coverage seen in larger South American basins.
