Hypomasticus lineomaculatus is a small headstander from the lower Amazon, described only in 2013 from the Rio Paru and Rio Jari, blackwater-influenced tributaries that drain the Guiana Shield into the Rio Amazonas in Brazil. It is a modest fish by any measure — a maximum recorded 2.5 in standard length puts it among the smaller members of its family, Anostomidae, far from the fin-nipping reputation that dogs some of its larger Leporinus and Anostomus relatives. Like other headstanders it grazes obliquely, head angled down toward the substrate, picking algae, biofilm and small invertebrates from wood and rock rather than hunting. It remains essentially unknown in the aquarium trade and undocumented in captivity, and the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient — an honest reflection of how little has been published on this species since its description.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypomasticus lineomaculatus was described in 2013 by José Birindelli, Luiz Peixoto, Wolmar Wosiacki and Heraldo Britski, part of a broader revision that resurrected and redefined the genus Hypomasticus within the headstander family Anostomidae, order Characiformes. The genus had previously been synonymised with the much larger Leporinus, and the 2013 work split out a group of smaller-bodied, more slender species — lineomaculatus among them — on the basis of dentition, squamation and other morphological characters. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the authority for valid names, recognises Hypomasticus lineomaculatus as a valid species in this reorganised genus.

The species epithet lineomaculatus is built from Latin lineo- ("lined") and maculatus ("spotted"), describing the combination of a linear stripe pattern and spotting on the body that distinguishes it from congeners. As a recently described, narrow-range species, it has not accumulated the synonymy or common-name history of older, more widely distributed anostomids, and it is not known to be confused with any other species in the aquarium trade simply because it does not appear to be in that trade in any documented quantity.

Morphology

Hypomasticus lineomaculatus is a small anostomid, with a maximum recorded length of just 2.5 in standard length — modest even among headstanders, a family that includes species growing well past 12 in. Like other members of the genus it has the elongated, torpedo-shaped body typical of Anostomidae, a terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth adapted for grazing, and the pattern of fine, close-set teeth used to rasp algae and biofilm from surfaces rather than to bite prey. The name lineomaculatus points to its most identifiable feature: a combination of linear striping and spotted marking along the flanks, the specific arrangement of which was part of what separated it from other small Hypomasticus species in the 2013 description.

Beyond the original taxonomic description, little morphological detail has been published for this species, and no aquarium photography or hobbyist documentation of live colouration is readily available. Prospective identification should rely on the original description and subsequent taxonomic literature rather than trade photos, given how rarely the species appears to have been collected or exported.

Habitat

The species is known from the Rio Paru and Rio Jari, tributaries that join the lower Rio Amazonas in Pará state, Brazil. Both rivers drain the Guiana Shield, a geologically old, nutrient-poor upland that typically produces clearwater to blackwater rivers — low in sediment and dissolved minerals, often tannin-stained and acidic. No species-specific temperature or pH readings have been published for Hypomasticus lineomaculatus itself, but the regional ecology of Guiana Shield tributaries in this part of the Amazon points to soft, acidic water, roughly in the 72–82 °F range typical of lowland Amazonian rivers, rather than confirmed measurements at the collection sites.

As a small grazer, it is reasonable to infer the species occupies structured habitat — submerged wood, rock and marginal vegetation — that offers grazing surface and cover, consistent with the feeding ecology described for the genus, though this has not been directly documented in the literature for lineomaculatus specifically.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level around 2.7 for Hypomasticus lineomaculatus, placing it solidly among the grazers and aufwuchs feeders rather than among predatory or heavily omnivorous characins. In practice this means the species most likely spends its time rasping algae and biofilm from submerged wood and rock, supplementing that with small invertebrates picked from the same surfaces — the classic headstander feeding strategy, carried out in the head-down, oblique posture that gives the group its common name.

No aquarium feeding data exists for this species since it is not established in the hobby. Were it kept, a diet built around vegetable matter — algae wafers, blanched vegetables, spirulina-based foods — supplemented with small amounts of protein such as micro-pellets or frozen foods, would follow directly from its documented grazer profile and match standard care for small Hypomasticus and Leporinus species.

Mating

The only breeding-relevant note in the literature comes from FishBase, which records that distinct pairs of Hypomasticus lineomaculatus breed in densely vegetated ("weedy") places — implying pair formation rather than group spawning, and a preference for structured, plant-rich sites for reproduction. No further detail on courtship behaviour, seasonal triggers or sexual dimorphism has been published, and the species has not been documented breeding in captivity.

Given the near-total absence of aquarium history for this species, any additional detail on courtship would be speculation rather than documented fact; this account is limited to what the original source material actually reports.

Breeding

Headstanders as a group are typically egg-scatterers with no parental care, and Hypomasticus lineomaculatus fits that pattern as far as the sparse record allows: FishBase notes only that pairs spawn in weedy, vegetated habitat, consistent with eggs being scattered among fine-leaved plants or plant-like structure rather than deposited in a guarded nest. There is no record of parental care, egg-guarding or fry-rearing behaviour for this species.

The species has not been bred in the aquarium hobby, and no aquaculture or captive-breeding programme is documented. As with several small, recently described Amazonian anostomids, it should be treated as effectively unbred in captivity — any keeper attempting to spawn it would be working without an established protocol.

In the aquarium

Hypomasticus lineomaculatus is essentially undocumented in the aquarium trade. Its small adult size — a maximum of 2.5 in standard length — would in principle make it far more manageable than the many larger Leporinus and Anostomus species that outgrow home aquaria and develop a reputation for fin-nipping and territorial aggression with age; a fish of this size poses none of those risks by virtue of its size alone. But without hobbyist accounts, husbandry reports or confirmed water-chemistry data specific to the species, any care sheet would be extrapolation rather than documented fact.

A cautious approach, drawn from its Guiana Shield blackwater-to-clearwater origin and its grazer feeding ecology, would suggest soft, acidic, well-oxygenated water, driftwood and rock for grazing surface, and a planted or structured setup consistent with how the genus is generally kept — but a prospective keeper should treat this as an educated inference, not an established protocol, given that the species does not appear to be established in the trade in any documented way.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypomasticus lineomaculatus as Data Deficient, with an assessment dated 28 April 2020. This reflects a genuine absence of published information on population size, trend or specific threats, rather than any known decline — a common outcome for a narrow-range species described as recently as 2013 from a limited number of collection localities in the Rio Paru and Rio Jari.

No specific conservation programme or threat assessment beyond the Data Deficient listing has been published. As with many small, recently described characins from limited Amazonian tributary systems, its conservation status would benefit from further field survey; in the meantime, the general pressures facing Amazonian freshwater systems — damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation and mining impacts on Guiana Shield rivers — are relevant long-term considerations even though no direct evidence links them to this species specifically.
