Hypomasticus thayeri was described in 1929 by the Russian-American ichthyologist Nikolai Borodin, originally in the genus Leporinus, and it was carried under that name — Leporinus thayeri — for most of the twentieth century. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes, a large Neotropical group defined by its distinctive oblique or vertical head-down feeding posture.
Leporinus has since been split by taxonomists working from dentition, scale counts and body proportions, and Hypomasticus thayeri now sits in the smaller genus Hypomasticus. As with many of these splits, older hobby and scientific literature still refers to the species as Leporinus thayeri, so both names can be found describing the same fish; this article follows the currently recognised combination, Hypomasticus thayeri. Its Portuguese common name, piau-beiçudo, is used in parts of its Brazilian range.
