A compact, boulder-clinging pleco from the swift Andean foothill streams of Peru, Chaetostoma lineopunctatum earns its rubbernose title from the broad, flexible, hypertrophied lip disc that it presses against rock faces in surging current. It grazes algae from substrate that would sweep most fish away — a high-energy specialist from one of the more challenging habitats in Neotropical ichthyology.

Taxonomy & naming

Chaetostoma lineopunctatum was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and William Ray Allen in 1942 in their monograph Fishes of Western South America (page 192, plate 6, figure 1), from specimens collected at Río Azupizú, a tributary of Río Pachitea in the Ucayali drainage, upper Amazon system, Peru. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the name as Chaetostoma lineopunctatum Eigenmann & Allen 1942, and recognises it as valid. The authority is not parenthesised because Eigenmann and Allen described the species directly in the genus Chaetostoma, and the combination has not changed. The variant spelling Chaetostoma lineopunctata appears as a synonym in the literature; the neuter form lineopunctatum is now standard.

Chaetostoma is one of the larger genera in the tribe Ancistrini (subfamily Hypostominae), and includes the 'rubbernose' or 'bulldog' plecos — stocky, broad-snouted loricariids specialised for rheophilic grazing. The genus is diagnosed by the absence of abdominal plates, well-developed interopercular odontodes (cheek spines), and the absence of rostral plates on the snout edge (with the exception of C. platyrhynchus). Unlike the closely related Ancistrus, Chaetostoma males lack fleshy tentacles on the snout.

A 2024 taxonomic paper (Meza et al.) describing a new Chaetostoma from the same Pampa de Sacramento region of the Ucayali system — which includes the Aguaytía, Pisqui, and Palcazu rivers — used C. lineopunctatum as a reference taxon, confirming its continued validity within the genus. Distribution data from FishBase and CoF indicates the species is known from the Aguaytía, Pachitea, and Pisqui river basins within the Ucayali drainage.

Morphology

Adults reach a maximum of approximately 5.5 in SL (PlanetCatfish records 5.5 in SL), making C. lineopunctatum a mid-sized member of its genus — smaller than the largest Chaetostoma but substantially larger than the miniature rubbernose forms sometimes sold as 'LDA' numbered imports.

The body form is classic Chaetostoma: broad, depressed, and heavily armoured with keeled scutes. The head is wide and flat, with a greatly expanded ventral lip disc that gives the genus its 'rubber-nose' or 'bulldog' common names. This disc is flexible and highly muscular, adapted for gripping smooth rock faces in strong current. The dorsal surface is tan to olive-brown with fine dark speckling — the 'lineopunctatum' pattern (lined and spotted). The underside is pale to cream.

Interopercular odontodes are well-developed; males bear longer, more numerous cheek spines than females, and this is one of the more reliable sexing characters in the genus. PlanetCatfish notes an additional dimorphic feature: males have a larger, broader head, slimmer ventral sides, and disproportionately large pelvic fins. The over-sized pelvic fins in males may serve to funnel sperm over an egg clutch in fast-flowing water — an adaptation to spawning in current where sperm dilution is a real risk.

The caudal fin is emarginate to moderately forked; the dorsal fin has a prominent spine and 7 rays. The pectoral spines are strong, providing anchorage against substrate in current.

Habitat

Chaetostoma lineopunctatum is restricted to the Ucayali River drainage in Peru, specifically the sub-basins of the Aguaytía, Pachitea, and Pisqui rivers (FishBase; CoF). These are Andean foothill and sub-Andean streams draining the eastern slopes of the Andes into the Amazon lowlands — fast-flowing, clear, well-oxygenated rivers over boulder, cobble, and bedrock substrate. The region encompasses the Pampa de Sacramento, a Peruvian lowland region at intermediate elevation (roughly 656–2625 ft asl) where mountain rivers fan out before joining the Ucayali plain.

The microhabitat of this species and its congeners is typically the exposed rock face in mid-current — a zone characterised by maximum dissolved oxygen, high algal productivity from photosynthesis in well-illuminated, clear water, and near-zero tolerance of organic pollution or fine sedimentation. Water temperatures in these Andean foothill streams are cooler than Amazonian lowland rivers: typically 64–75 °F, though the specific range for this taxon has not been precisely measured in the field.

The Aguaytía and Pisqui drainages discharge into the Ucayali, which is itself an Amazon tributary. Vegetation bordering these rivers includes lowland tropical forest, with a high degree of riparian shading in smaller tributaries. The substrate clarity and current regime are the defining habitat parameters for Chaetostoma: sedimentation events from deforestation-driven erosion are likely among the most significant stressors for this habitat specialist.

Feeding

Chaetostoma lineopunctatum is an aufwuchs grazer — it feeds on the community of microalgae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and associated microinvertebrates coating rock surfaces in flowing water. The broad, flexible lip disc functions as a suction pad and scraping tool: the fish applies it flush to the rock face, rasps the surface with its fine, multi-cusped teeth, and draws the loosened material into the buccal cavity. The teeth of Chaetostoma are bicuspid (two-pointed), differing from the spoon-shaped spatulate teeth of the wood-eating Panaque clade.

In the aquarium, C. lineopunctatum will graze algae on tank glass, smooth rocks, and wood, but requires supplementary feeding to thrive. Algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables — courgette, cucumber, and peas are all accepted — should be provided daily. Some individuals take sinking pellets. This is not a species that subsists on tank algae alone; it should be considered a fish that needs dedicated feeding rather than a 'cleanup crew' member.

The species is unsuited to tanks with soft, fine substrate or silty, sediment-rich water — conditions that cover the rock surfaces on which it feeds and provide no suitable grazing. A tank with smooth, exposed rocks and good current will allow the most natural feeding behaviour. Avoid high-protein animal-based foods as a dietary staple; digestive issues are reported in Chaetostoma fed diets too high in meat.

Mating

Courtship in Chaetostoma has not been specifically documented for C. lineopunctatum, but observations of the genus in aquaria provide a consistent picture. Males compete for preferred flat, smooth spawning sites — the underside of a flat stone, a broad piece of slate, or a piece of smooth rock — and display interopercular odontodes to rival males and to prospective females.

PlanetCatfish notes that males in the genus bear disproportionately large pelvic fins, which may play a key role in fertilisation by inverting over the egg clutch to prevent sperm from being swept away in fast-flowing water. This behaviour — a male inverting upside-down against the clutch with pelvic fins splayed — has been directly observed in several Chaetostoma species in aquaria and in the field.

Females can be distinguished from males by the narrower head, slimmer snout, and smaller interopercular odontodes, in addition to the size difference in pelvic fins. Conditioning both sexes on a varied diet of spirulina, vegetables, and occasional protein sources ahead of an attempted breeding trigger is recommended. Providing flat stones angled slightly to replicate the underside of a submerged boulder is effective.

Breeding

PlanetCatfish records the spawning mode for Chaetostoma as follows: the fish spawns in shallow, fast-flowing water on the underside of a flat object, with the male guarding an adhesive clutch of eggs by positioning himself upside-down over them, covering the clutch with his body. No specific breeding report has been registered for C. lineopunctatum on PlanetCatfish, but this pattern holds across the genus.

In practice, successfully breeding Chaetostoma in captivity requires replicating the key water conditions: strong, consistent water movement (powerhead or spray bar), good oxygenation, cool-to-moderate water temperature (64–73 °F), and a very clean tank — accumulated organic waste degrades water quality in a way particularly stressful to this rheophilic, high-oxygen specialist. A flat stone or smooth tile placed at an angle under which the fish can position themselves is the most productive spawning substrate.

Egg clutches in the genus are typically small (20–60 eggs) and incubation is rapid in well-oxygenated, cool water — roughly 5–7 days is typical for congeners. The male fans and defends the clutch through hatching. Fry initially attach to substrate and feed on the yolk sac before beginning to graze algae and accept finely ground vegetable-based foods. Fry are somewhat fragile and require pristine water quality.

In the aquarium

Chaetostoma lineopunctatum is infrequently available in the hobby; what are sold as 'rubbernose plecos' or 'bulldog plecos' are often undetermined Chaetostoma species, sometimes labelled as L-number variants. When this species does appear it is generally imported from Peru. Its requirements are somewhat more exacting than the commonly kept Ancistrus, and it is not the right fish for a low-maintenance general community tank.

The essential requirements are strong current, excellent oxygenation, and cool-to-moderate water temperature. Sustained temperatures above 79 °F cause stress and immune depression; this is a montane foothill species adapted to cooler Andean river water. pH should be neutral to slightly acidic (6.5–7.5), hardness soft to moderate. A 15–20 US gal tank is adequate for a single individual; a compatible pair needs at least 25 US gal with sufficient rock structure to partition territories.

Furnishing should centre on smooth, exposed rocks — river cobbles, smooth stones of various sizes — stacked to create caves and crevices that replicate a riverbed. Fine gravel or coarse sand substrate is appropriate; avoid deep fine sand. Bogwood provides additional surfaces and refuge. Plants can be included but must be robust species compatible with strong current (Anubias, Microsorum, Bolbitis).

C. lineopunctatum is peaceful toward other species and will coexist with small tetras, danios, and other current-loving fish. It can be kept with Corydoras. Avoid mixing with other Chaetostoma in small tanks unless space and rock structure is generous. Males are territorial with each other.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Chaetostoma lineopunctatum as Least Concern in 2014, reflecting its occurrence across multiple sub-basins of the Ucayali drainage and no evidence of significant population decline at the time of assessment. The species is known from the Aguaytía, Pachitea, and Pisqui river systems — a combined catchment of substantial geographic extent.

The primary conservation concern for this species and its habitat is deforestation and the consequent sedimentation and disruption of the clear, fast-flowing streams on which rheophilic Chaetostoma depend. The Peruvian Amazon has experienced significant deforestation pressure, particularly at the Andean foothill transition zone where this species occurs. Increased fine sediment load smothers the biofilm-covered rock surfaces that constitute the species' feeding substrate and can cause acute mortality during sediment pulse events.

The ornamental fish trade collects some Chaetostoma from Peruvian rivers, though specific collection pressure on C. lineopunctatum is unclear. The species has no L-number designation and is not a high-profile trade target. No specific conservation measures or captive-breeding programmes are documented. Continued forest conservation in the Pachitea and Aguaytía watersheds is the most relevant protection for this species and the diverse high-flow community it represents.
