Nannocharax gracilis is a small, slender African characin from Congo basin streams, placed in the family Distichodontidae alongside the much larger, plant-shredding Distichodus and the deep-bodied citharinids. It shares the family's underslung, algae-and-detritus-grazing mouth in miniature form rather than the aggressive reputation that clings to some of its bigger relatives, and it is a modest, bottom-oriented fish rather than a predator. Hard data on this particular species is thin — much of what is known comes from better-documented congeners such as N. dageti and N. brevis, which top out around 1.5–2 in — so this account states plainly where the record is sparse rather than filling gaps with guesswork. In the aquarium it is a quiet, easily overlooked fish for a planted, gently flowing setup that mimics its native Congo tributaries.

Taxonomy & naming

Nannocharax gracilis was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1939 from Congo basin material. It sits in the genus Nannocharax, a large assemblage of small, slender-bodied African characins within the family Distichodontidae — the family that also contains the much larger, deep-bodied Distichodus and the grazing citharinid genus Citharinus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) governs the currently accepted name and generic placement, and this account follows that placement without alteration.

The genus name Nannocharax combines the Greek nannos ("dwarf") with Charax, a classical fish-genus name used widely across Characiformes, reflecting the genus's small body size relative to its Distichodontidae relatives. The species epithet gracilis is Latin for "slender" or "thin", almost certainly describing the narrow, elongated caudal peduncle and generally slim build that distinguishes Nannocharax species from their stockier family-mates.

Morphology

Precise size data specific to Nannocharax gracilis was not located in available sources. Closely related, better-documented congeners give the best working estimate: N. dageti reaches about 1.5 in standard length, and similar small Nannocharax species generally run in the 1–2 in range as adults. In the aquarium, keepers should plan around this preference for small live or frozen fare over prepared foods, offering bloodworm, Daphnia, micro-worms and other small invertebrate foods regularly, with fine sinking foods to reach a fish that spends most of its time near the bottom. Mating

Because it favours small live and frozen invertebrate foods over dry preparations, keepers should be ready to offer bloodworm, Daphnia and similar fare rather than rely on flake alone. Gentle flow, subdued lighting, leaf litter and plenty of hiding cover suit its benthic, retiring habits and echo the Congo tributary streams it comes from. As with most small, poorly documented African characins, availability in the trade is limited and largely dependent on wild collection, so buyers should ask suppliers about sourcing.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List records Nannocharax gracilis as Least Concern, though the assessment year and specific taxon ID were not located in the sources reviewed here, so no year is cited for that status. A Least Concern rating for a Congo basin stream fish generally reflects a wide-ranging, still-abundant species rather than one facing an imminent threat, but detailed population-trend data specific to this species was not found.
