Taxonomy & naming
Nannocharax taenia was described by the Belgian-based British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1902, part of a wave of new African characin species he named from collections made in the Congo basin around the turn of the twentieth century. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Nannocharax, a group of small, elongate, bottom-associated characins that the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as distinct from its much larger relatives in the same family, such as the plant-grazing Distichodus.
The specific epithet taenia comes from the Greek tainía (ταινία), meaning "band" or "ribbon," a direct reference to the dark bars crossing the fish's back and sides — the same root that gives English "taenia" for tapeworm and other banded or ribbon-like structures. As with many small, regionally restricted Nannocharax species, N. taenia has not been the subject of substantial taxonomic revision since its original description, and it is best treated with appropriate caution: data on this exact species beyond the type description and basic distribution records is sparse.
Morphology
Nannocharax taenia has the typical body plan of its genus: an elongate, slightly compressed, torpedo-shaped body suited to holding position in flowing water, a small subterminal or slightly underslung mouth adapted for grazing over the substrate, and the distinguishing feature that gives the species its name — roughly a dozen dark brown bars crossing the back and flanks against a paler background. This banded pattern provides effective camouflage against dappled light on sand and gravel river bottoms.
No species-specific maximum length has been published for N. taenia, but its congeners in Nannocharax are consistently tiny: FishBase records related species such as N. parvus at 2 in, N. fasciatus at 2.5 in, N. latifasciatus at 2 in, N. intermedius at 2 in, N. signifer at 2 in and N. niloticus at 2 in standard length. N. taenia almost certainly falls within this same 2–2.5 in range, making it one of the smallest characins in the African fauna rather than anything resembling a piranha or pacu in size or build.
Habitat
Nannocharax taenia is documented from the Congo River basin, including the upper Congo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, placing it within a genus whose members are distributed more broadly across African river systems including the Congo, Niger, Nile, Volta, Senegal and Zambezi/Okavango drainages. Like other small Nannocharax, it is associated with flowing water over sand, gravel or fine substrate rather than still, vegetated backwaters, consistent with its grazing lifestyle and camouflage pattern.
Detailed water-chemistry data specific to N. taenia has not been located in the sources consulted for this account.
