Taxonomy & naming
Neolebias trilineatus was described by the Belgian-based ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1899. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae, the African characin family that also contains the much larger, plant-grazing Distichodus and the deep-bodied citharinids, and it sits in the small genus Neolebias alongside a handful of other diminutive African characins such as N. ansorgii and N. unifasciatus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats the genus placement and the species as valid; GBIF occurrence records confirm Neolebias trilineatus Boulenger, 1899 as the accepted binomial.
Genus and species-group Distichodontidae is a large, diverse African family, and its members range enormously in adult size and temperament — from Neolebias' few centimetres to the 40+ cm plant-shredding Distichodus sexfasciatus — so identity at the genus level tells you little on its own; N. trilineatus is properly evaluated on its own biology, not by association with its larger relatives.
Morphology
This is a genuinely tiny characin: SeriouslyFish and FishBase field-guide records both put the maximum size at around 1.5 in, making it one of the smallest characiform species kept in the hobby. The body is slender and laterally compressed, with a small, subterminal mouth suited to picking at small food items rather than grasping prey, and the common name references the three dark longitudinal stripes that run along the flanks — the field mark that distinguishes it from other small Neolebias species, which typically show a single dark lateral band.
Colouration is subtle rather than showy: an olive-to-tan base with the three dark stripes, and in good condition the fins and lower body can take on a warm reddish-orange cast, particularly in males. Because the species is so small and its markings can fade under stress or poor conditions, it is easily overlooked or mis-set in a busy community tank — it needs calm surroundings and close observation to be appreciated.
Habitat
Neolebias trilineatus is native to the Congo River basin, recorded from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic. Like many small West and Central African forest-stream characins, it is associated with quiet, densely vegetated margins and slow-flowing tributary habitat rather than open river channel, where dense plant growth and submerged debris give a small-bodied, weak-swimming fish cover from predators.
Water in this part of the Congo basin runs warm and on the soft, mildly acidic side; SeriouslyFish gives a keeping range of roughly pH 6.0–7.2 and 73–79 °F as representative of the species' natural and aquarium requirements. As with most small Congo-basin characins, stable, gentle conditions matter more than any single parameter, and sudden swings in chemistry or flow are poorly tolerated by such a small fish.
Feeding
Neolebias trilineatus is a small-mouthed micropredator rather than a herbivore or grazer — it is not a plant-shredder like its larger Distichodus relatives. SeriouslyFish and Fishi-Pedia both describe it as favouring live and frozen foods: small items such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, micro-worm and fine bloodworm suit its mouth size, and it is generally reluctant to take dried flake or pellet with any enthusiasm.
In the aquarium, feeding this species well means offering small, meaty live or frozen foods regularly rather than relying on flake, and feeding in a way that lets a shy, slow-feeding shoal get to the food before faster tankmates clean it out. Good condition and colour depend directly on a varied, appropriately sized diet.
Mating
Courtship in Neolebias trilineatus is not well documented in the literature, and there is no established, reliable account of external sexual dimorphism beyond the general characin pattern of males showing a slightly more intense reddish-orange tone and a marginally slimmer profile than females, which appear fuller-bodied when carrying eggs. Breeders who have spawned the species report that conditioning a group on live foods and softening and slightly acidifying the water can help trigger spawning activity, mirroring the wet-season cues used by many small Congo-basin characins, but detailed pairing behaviour has not been formally described.
Breeding
Neolebias trilineatus is an egg-scattering species with no parental care, and it is rarely bred in the home aquarium — data here is genuinely sparse. A breeding thread on the Aquatic Quotient forum describes success with soft, slightly acidic water (around pH 6.4, GH 3–4) at 73–79 °F over fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, with eggs scattered non-adhesively among the vegetation; the same account reports eggs hatching in roughly 24–36 hours and fry becoming free-swimming after about 72 hours, requiring infusoria followed by newly hatched brine shrimp as first foods.
As with most small Distichodontidae, adults show no guarding behaviour and will eat their own eggs and fry given the chance, so a dedicated, densely planted or mop-filled breeding tank separate from the main shoal is needed for any deliberate spawning attempt. This is not a species that is farmed or bred at commercial scale; what aquarium stock exists relies substantially on hobbyist effort and, historically, wild collection.
In the aquarium
Neolebias trilineatus is a peaceful, timid nano shoaler that needs to be kept in a proper group — Fishi-Pedia and SeriouslyFish both recommend eight or more — in a small, densely planted tank with dark substrate, gentle filtration and subdued lighting. Given its adult size of roughly 1.5 in, it is unambiguously a nano-tank species: it does not need, and would be lost in, a large aquarium, and it should never be mixed with boisterous, fast-feeding, or simply oversized tankmates that will outcompete it for food or intimidate it into hiding permanently.
Water should be kept soft and mildly acidic, around pH 6.0–7.2 and 73–79 °F, in a mature, stable, well-planted setup — floating plants and fine-leaved stem plants both suit its shy nature and its preference for cover. This is a fish for a dedicated, quiet nano or species community tank rather than a general community showpiece, and its rewards are subtlety and natural shoaling behaviour rather than size or spectacle.
Conservation
Neolebias trilineatus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. It has not been the subject of the kind of targeted, large-scale trade pressure or habitat-loss documentation seen in some other Congo-basin fishes, and no major population decline has been reported.
As with many small, poorly studied Congo-basin characins, the aquarium trade in this species is comparatively modest, and it is not commercially farmed at any scale — data on population trends and specific threats remains limited. The broader, well-documented pressures on Congo basin freshwater habitats (deforestation, water-quality change and localized development) are relevant long-term context even though this particular species is not currently flagged as threatened.
