Parodon guyanensis is a small, quiet grazer from fast, rocky rivers of the Orinoco basin and the coastal drainages of the Guianas — a modest fish that belongs to a family (Parodontidae) with no relation, in habit or temperament, to the piranhas that share this section of the atlas. Rather than hunting or scavenging, it spends its time rasping algae and biofilm from stones in rapids and riffles with a small, underslung, tooth-lined mouth built for scraping rather than biting. It rarely exceeds about 4.5 in and stays out of the news, but it is a useful reminder that "characin" covers far more ground than teeth and legend — most of the family's diversity is unglamorous, algae-grazing, rapids-dwelling fish like this one.

Taxonomy & naming

Parodon guyanensis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1960. It belongs to the genus Parodon and the family Parodontidae — the parodontids, a small Neotropical family of scraping, algae-grazing characins that is only distantly related to the pacus and piranhas of Serrasalmidae covered elsewhere in this section. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for the valid name and combination.

Parodontidae as a whole is a taxonomically stable but under-studied family; species boundaries within Parodon rest heavily on tooth shape, scale counts and fin-ray formulae rather than on colour pattern, since most members are drably silver-brown river fish. Parodon guyanensis is grouped here with the hemiodontids and other minor, lesser-known characins because, like them, it is a quiet, unglamorous shoaling grazer rather than a predator or a migratory food fish.
