Taxonomy & naming
Pristobrycon maculipinnis was described by William L. Fink and Antonio Machado-Allison in 1992, distinguishing it from its congeners by its marbled body pattern and the dark spotting on its fins that gives the species its epithet. It belongs to the family Serrasalmidae — the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Pristobrycon, a small assemblage of true piranhas that the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) separates from the larger, more familiar genera Pygocentrus and Serrasalmus.
The species has at times been placed in Serrasalmus in older aquarium and hobbyist literature — it circulated for years under the combination "Serrasalmus maculipinnis" — but the currently accepted valid combination is Pristobrycon maculipinnis, and that is the name used throughout this article. Reliable identification rests on the marbled flank pattern together with the dark spots scattered across the fins, both of which separate it from similarly sized congeners collected in the same Orinoco tributaries.
Morphology
Pristobrycon maculipinnis is a moderately sized true piranha, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 10 in — noticeably smaller than the well-known Pygocentrus nattereri or the largest Serrasalmus species. It shares the classic piranha body plan: a deep, laterally compressed profile, a blunt head with an underslung lower jaw, and a single row of interlocking, blade-like teeth built for shearing rather than crushing.
The species' calling card is its coloration, from which both the common name "marbled piranha" and the scientific epithet maculipinnis ("spotted fin") derive: a mottled, marbled pattern across the body combined with distinct dark spots on the fins. Aquarium accounts note that this marbling darkens and intensifies in males in breeding condition, suggesting the pattern carries some signalling function, though this has not been formally studied.
Habitat
Pristobrycon maculipinnis is endemic to the upper Orinoco basin of Venezuela. The type material was collected from a tributary of the Pamoni River in the Casiquiare basin, and the species is also documented from the Atabapo basin, placing its known range within the network of blackwater and clearwater tributaries that drain into the upper Orinoco near the Venezuela–Colombia border.
These upper Orinoco tributaries are characteristically soft, acidic, tannin-stained or clear waters typical of the region's nutrient-poor, sand- and rock-bottomed river systems. As with many characins from this drainage, structure — submerged wood, roots and marginal vegetation — likely plays an important role in the species' ecology, though detailed field studies of its habitat use have not been located in the available literature.
Feeding
Pristobrycon maculipinnis is a predatory, opportunistic feeder consistent with its genus: FishBase-derived accounts describe it attacking the fins of other fish and taking small fish as prey, while juveniles rely more heavily on insects and crustaceans. This fin-nipping habit — biting a piece from a passing fish rather than necessarily killing it outright — mirrors the well-documented feeding ecology of its better-studied relatives and is a large part of why aquarists are warned against keeping it with fin-heavy or slow-moving tankmates.
In the aquarium the species takes standard meaty carnivore fare — fish fillet, prawn and similar foods along with quality pellets — and keepers are cautioned, as with all piranhas, against relying on live "feeder" fish, which carry disease risk and offer poor nutrition relative to a varied prepared diet.
Mating
Documented information on courtship in Pristobrycon maculipinnis is sparse. Aquarium accounts note that the species' aggression intensifies during breeding condition and that the marbled coloration of males darkens and becomes more pronounced at this time, which is consistent with the general pattern in true piranhas of increased territoriality and visual signalling around spawning. Beyond that, no detailed description of pairing behaviour, courtship display or external sexing has been located in the available sources, and this article does not speculate beyond what is documented.
Breeding
As in other true piranhas of the genera Pristobrycon, Pygocentrus and Serrasalmus, the expected mode for this species is substrate spawning: a pair clears and defends a nest site among roots or vegetation, and the adhesive eggs are guarded and fanned at the site, most often by the male, until they hatch within a few days. However, detailed, species-specific breeding accounts for Pristobrycon maculipinnis — clutch size, incubation period, fry-rearing details — are not present in the available sources, and unlike Pygocentrus nattereri this species does not appear to be routinely bred in the hobby or commercially.

Pristobrycon maculipinnis is generally kept as a solitary specimen or in carefully managed company with conspecifics, reflecting the more territorial, less shoal-dependent temperament reported for this species compared with the classic shoaling Pygocentrus piranhas. Aquarium sources recommend a substantial tank — on the order of 105 US gal for a small group of four individuals — with dense cover from wood and robust plantings, and stable warm water in the range of 72–82 °F.
As with all true piranhas, the jaws are genuinely formidable and the fish should be moved by container rather than net; feeding-time caution is not folklore. Behaviour is described as highly aggressive toward smaller species, so tankmates should be limited or avoided altogether, and that aggression is reported to intensify further when the fish is in breeding condition. Finally, and critically, piranhas of every genus — including Pristobrycon — are restricted, permit-controlled or outright banned in many U.S. states and a number of countries because of concern over establishment in local waterways. A prospective keeper must check local and state law before acquiring one, and must never release a piranha into open water under any circumstances.
Conservation

This is common among characins restricted to a single, remote river drainage such as the upper Orinoco tributaries of Venezuela, where formal population assessments are limited by the difficulty of surveying a small-range, low-profile species rather than by any known evidence of decline.
