Taxonomy & naming
Chaetostoma dorsale was formally described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1922 in the Memoirs of the Carnegie Museum (volume 9, number 1, page 226), from specimens collected at Río Albirregas and Río Millo near Mérida, northwestern Venezuela. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; updated June 2026) lists the valid combination as Chaetostoma dorsale Eigenmann 1922; the earlier combination Chaetostomus dorsalis (the original genus spelling Eigenmann used was Chaetostomus) is now treated as a synonym. Ceas & Page (1996) provided diagnostic characters for the species.
The genus Chaetostoma was established by Tschudi in 1846 for the broad-snouted, rubbernose-type loricariids of Andean stream environments, and belongs to the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae within the family Loricariidae — one of the five generally accepted loricariid subfamilies (Armbruster 2004). Phylogenetic analyses place Chaetostoma as a morphologically cohesive but species-rich genus of around 47 valid species distributed across Andean and sub-Andean drainages on both Pacific and Atlantic slopes.
In the ornamental fish trade, C. dorsale circulates under two L-numbers: L187, assigned by the German magazine DATZ to specimens exported from the upper Orinoco region, and L443, a later code applied to fish arriving via Colombian export channels. Both codes refer to the same valid species.
Morphology
Adult Chaetostoma dorsale reach approximately 3.5 in standard length (SL), making this one of the smaller species in the genus and a genuinely compact aquarium fish by loricariid standards. The body plan is characteristic of Chaetostoma: depressed and broad anteriorly, with a distinctly blunt and rounded snout that lacks the bony plates and odontodes found over most of the body — the 'rubbernose' profile that gives the group its hobbyist common names. This naked, slightly fleshy snout tip is an adaptation for conforming to irregular rock surfaces in strong current and is the easiest visual distinction from Ancistrus, which bears fleshy tentacles on the snout in males.
Dorsal and lateral surfaces are covered in bony scutes; the ventral surface is unplated. Ground colour is typically brown to grey-brown, with a variable pattern of darker spots, pale reticulations, or short streaks over the body; the dark dorsal and caudal fins are distinctive in the hand and contribute to the 'blackfinned' common name. The underside is paler, often cream to off-white.
Sexual dimorphism is present. Males develop more prominent interopercular odontodes (the stiff, spine-like structures behind the gill cover) and heavier pectoral-spine odontodes, particularly during the breeding season. Males also tend to have a larger, broader head and, per PlanetCatfish contributor observations, disproportionately large pelvic fins thought to play a role in fertilisation in fast-flowing water.
Habitat
Chaetostoma dorsale is a high-gradient stream specialist, occurring in the Orinoco basin on both sides of the Andes foothills: the upper Meta and upper Guaviare drainages in eastern Colombia, and the upper Apure and adjacent Orinoco tributaries in western Venezuela (including the type locality rivers near Mérida). The Catalog of Fishes notes distribution across the Orinoco basin broadly, while FishBase specifies the upper Meta and upper Apuré river basins.
Microhabitat is fast-flowing piedmont streams with exposed bedrock, boulders, and cobbles. Water in these Andean foothill rivers is generally clear, cool (approximately 68–79 °F depending on elevation and season), and highly oxygenated; conductivity and hardness are elevated relative to Amazonian blackwater streams because the catchments weather mineral-rich Andean rock. PlanetCatfish notes that C. dorsale has been collected from piedmont rivers with high abundance, consistent with the species' tolerance of turbulent, well-oxygenated conditions.
FishBase records the species as facultatively air-breathing — a feature observed at the genus level in loricariids occupying oxygen-variable habitats — but in practice the aquatic, current-hugging habit dominates, and the fish does not normally surface in well-oxygenated aquaria. The IUCN assessed the species as Vulnerable in 2020 (criterion B2ab(iii)), citing a restricted area of occupancy and continued decline in piedmont stream habitat quality from agriculture and deforestation.
Feeding
Chaetostoma dorsale is principally an aufwuchs grazer: its multicuspid teeth and muscular oral disc are adapted for rasping the thin but nutritionally rich biofilm of algae, diatoms, bacteria, microinvertebrates, and fine detritus that coats exposed rock surfaces in fast, well-lit streams. In the wild, this periphyton layer constitutes the bulk of the diet. The flat, naked snout is mechanically well suited to hugging irregular surfaces while the oral disc maintains suction and the teeth scrape biofilm.
In the aquarium, the dietary strategy translates to a requirement for abundant accessible algae. Strong lighting that promotes natural algal growth on rocks and glass is the most effective solution; supplementary feeding should lean heavily on vegetable matter: high-quality algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking discs, and blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, spinach, or sweet potato are all accepted. A blank glass or bare-bottom tank without algae will leave this fish chronically underfed even if sinking pellets are offered.
Occasional meaty supplements — frozen bloodworm, daphnia, or Artemia — are accepted and useful for conditioning, but should not dominate the diet. Overcaloric, protein-heavy feeding patterns used for cave-spawning Hypancistrus are inappropriate here and may lead to digestive issues or obesity over time.
Mating
Mating behaviour in Chaetostoma dorsale has been observed in captivity, though published accounts in the primary literature are sparse. The species follows the general Chaetostoma pattern: the male cleans and defends a spawning site — typically the underside of a flat stone, a shallow cave formed by stacked rocks, or an enclosed horizontal surface — and courts approaching females by occupying and displaying from the site.
A notable feature observed in the genus is that males have disproportionately large pelvic fins; PlanetCatfish notes a hypothesis that by inverting these over the clutch, the male prevents sperm from being swept away by the strong current that characterises the species' natural environment. This is consistent with the observation that spawning occurs in or near fast flow in the wild, and highlights the mismatch between still-water aquaria and the species' natural conditions.
Females are somewhat smaller and rounder-bodied than males; sex is most reliably determined by examining the interopercular odontode development and pelvic fin proportions, or by comparing body width from above when a gravid female is conditioned. Males may skirmish briefly over preferred sites but serious fighting is uncommon if the tank is not overstocked.
Breeding
Chaetostoma dorsale spawns on the underside of flat objects or on sheltered rock surfaces in shallow, fast-flowing water — a pattern documented on PlanetCatfish and consistent with the species' piedmont stream ecology. The male guards the adhesive clutch by covering it with his body, using his large pelvic fins to shelter and fan the eggs. No breeding reports are registered on PlanetCatfish for this species as of 2026, suggesting captive reproduction is uncommon, likely because the cool-water, high-current requirements are not consistently replicated.
Successful conditioning requires stable cool temperatures (ideally 68–75 °F), a strong powerhead or spray-bar generating significant current, and excellent water quality with high dissolved oxygen. A diet rich in algae and supplemented with frozen invertebrate foods helps bring fish into reproductive condition. Water changes with slightly cooler, fresh water can simulate seasonal rainfall cues that trigger spawning in Andean stream fishes.
Fry are miniature replicas of the adults upon emergence and require a constant supply of fine algae and biofilm. Powdered spirulina wafers and microwaved courgette paste applied to rocks can supplement naturally developing biofilm. The male guards the clutch through hatching; once fry are free-swimming they are generally independent.
In the aquarium
Chaetostoma dorsale is a rewarding but specific aquarium fish whose requirements differ meaningfully from those of lowland tropical plecos. The three non-negotiable elements are cool water, strong current, and abundant algae. Temperatures should be maintained in the range of 68–79 °F — the lower end is preferable; running this species at 81–82 °F long-term will compromise immune function and lifespan. A strong filter return, powerhead, or spray bar is essential: the fish needs to experience visible current, not merely adequate flow for filtration purposes.
Aquarium Glaser notes that C. dorsale grows to 4–4.5 in and requires water temperatures between 23 and 81 °F alongside a large oxygen supply — the emphasis on oxygenation is significant and should be a guiding principle. A tank of at least 15–20 US gal with a long footprint and a rocky hardscape is appropriate for a pair; groups need proportionally more space and multiple territorial refuge areas among stacked stones.
The species is peaceful toward tankmates that share its cool-water requirements: small hillstream loaches, dither fish such as white clouds (Tanichthys albonubes), and similarly sized catfishes are compatible. Do not house with standard tropical community fish maintained at 79–82 °F if the cool-water requirement is to be met properly.
This species is regularly sold in the trade as a 'rubbernose pleco' or 'bulldog pleco' — terms applied to several Chaetostoma species — and is frequently purchased by hobbyists expecting a forgiving, easy algae eater. It can succeed in community tanks, but only if the current, oxygenation, and temperature requirements are genuinely met. Soft, tannin-rich blackwater conditions are inappropriate for this piedmont species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Chaetostoma dorsale as Vulnerable (VU; criterion B2ab(iii)) in November 2020. The assessment is linked to a limited area of occupancy within its Orinoco piedmont range in Venezuela and Colombia, combined with inferred continuing decline in the extent and quality of clean, fast-flowing headwater stream habitat across that range.
The principal drivers of habitat degradation in the Mérida piedmont (Venezuela) and the upper Meta/Guaviare drainage (Colombia) include deforestation for cattle ranching and agriculture, which increases sedimentation and nutrient loading in streams; agrochemical runoff; and expanding road and infrastructure networks. These pressures reduce the clean, turbulent, boulder-strewn habitat on which C. dorsale depends — habitats that are inherently limited because they occur only along the steep, actively eroding piedmont zone where rivers descend from the Andes.
Ornamental fish export is an additional pressure. The species has been collected for the trade from both Venezuelan (near Mérida) and Colombian sources for decades, and is regularly available in European and North American markets under the L187/L443 codes. Captive breeding in the hobby is currently poorly documented, and the trade remains largely dependent on wild-caught individuals.
No species-specific conservation measures are formally in place. Ongoing deforestation and the trajectory of agricultural expansion in both countries make the maintenance of the piedmont stream habitat a long-term challenge. The species' restricted range and specific habitat requirements mean that even localised degradation has disproportionate population-level consequences.
