Taxonomy & naming

Prochilodus brevis was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1875, from the Salgado River basin near Lavras da Mangabeira in Ceará, Brazil, which remains the species' type locality. It belongs to the family Prochilodontidae — the bocachicos or curimatãs — a lineage of detritus- and biofilm-feeding characiforms placed close to Curimatidae and separate from the pacu-and-piranha family Serrasalmidae covered elsewhere in this atlas. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for the valid combination Prochilodus brevis within the genus Prochilodus.

The specific epithet brevis is Latin for "short", a reference to the species' comparatively shorter, shallower body relative to other Prochilodus such as the much larger, better-known P. lineatus of the Paraná or P. nigricans of the Amazon. In the trade and in Brazilian fisheries literature it goes by curimatã or curimatã-pioa, names shared loosely across several related bocachico species, so common names alone are not a reliable guide to which Prochilodus is actually being discussed.
