Taxonomy & naming
Prochilodus argenteus was described by Johann Baptist von Spix and Louis Agassiz in 1829, part of the same expedition-era body of work that produced many of the earliest scientific names for Brazilian freshwater fishes. It belongs to the family Prochilodontidae — the "flannelmouth" or detritivorous characins, closely related to but distinct from Serrasalmidae (the piranhas and pacus) and Curimatidae (the curimatas) within the broader characin radiation of the order Characiformes.
The genus Prochilodus is retained here as the valid combination; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for the genus and family placement of this species. Prochilodus argenteus is endemic to the São Francisco River basin of Brazil, where it occurs alongside its close relative P. costatus, and the two are sometimes confused in regional fisheries data. The type locality is the Rio São Francisco near Barreiras, Bahia, Brazil.
Morphology
Prochilodus argenteus has the classic prochilodontid body plan: a deep, laterally compressed, almost oval body with a small, protrusible, downturned mouth adapted for grazing biofilm and detritus off submerged surfaces rather than for grasping prey. The flanks are bright silver, giving rise to the species epithet and the trade name "silver prochilodus," and the caudal fin typically carries dark banding or striping — the basis for the alternative trade name "flagtail prochilodus."
FishBase records a maximum published size of 23.5 in standard length and a maximum published weight of 6.8 kg, making this a genuinely large characin well beyond the scale of most aquarium tetras or even most silver dollars. An alternative estimate from the Encyclopedia of Life cites a smaller figure of around 17.5 in, likely reflecting a different measurement standard or a more typical adult size rather than the FishBase maximum; either way, this is a large-bodied river fish, not a small ornamental species.
Habitat
Prochilodus argenteus is endemic to the São Francisco River basin of northeastern Brazil, one of the country's major river systems, and has also been introduced to other river basins in northeastern Brazil outside its native range. Within the São Francisco system it inhabits the main river channel and its larger tributaries, moving between habitats seasonally as part of its migratory life history.
As a warm-water tropical Brazilian river species, it lives in generally warm conditions typical of the São Francisco basin; specific published pH and hardness data were not found in the cache for this species, so keepers should default to warm, moderate-hardness, circumneutral river conditions typical of large Brazilian river systems rather than assuming extreme blackwater parameters. Dams and altered flow regimes across the São Francisco basin affect the river's natural flood pulse, which is directly tied to this species' spawning migration (see "Breeding").
Feeding
Prochilodus argenteus is an omnivore with a strongly herbivorous/detritivorous emphasis, consistent with its small, downturned, sucker-like mouth. In the wild it grazes detritus, algae and biofilm from submerged surfaces and sediment, a feeding strategy shared broadly across the genus Prochilodus and its relatives among the São Francisco's migratory characins.
In the aquarium trade this translates directly into husbandry: a diet built around high-quality spirulina and algae-based wafers or pellets, plus blanched vegetables such as zucchini, spinach and lettuce, with only occasional protein items like bloodworms or brine shrimp. Keepers should not treat this as a carnivore or general omnivore in the manner of a piranha or silver dollar — its gut and feeding apparatus are built for grazing, and a diet too heavy in protein is a mismatch for its natural biology.
Mating
Reproductive biology research from the São Francisco River describes Prochilodus argenteus as a migratory species whose reproduction is tied to an upstream spawning run timed to the seasonal flood pulse, a pattern shared with its congener P. costatus and with many other large Neotropical river characins. Fish move upstream in aggregations ahead of spawning, a behaviour driven by rising water levels and increased river discharge rather than by paired courtship of the kind seen in nest-building characins.
No external sexual dimorphism data were found in the cache for this species; published accounts focus on the migratory and hormonal aspects of reproduction rather than on courtship display or visible sex differences, and none should be assumed.
Breeding
Prochilodus argenteus is a long-distance spawning migrator, not a fish that can be bred in a home aquarium. Its natural reproduction depends on an upstream migration synchronised with the seasonal flood pulse of the São Francisco River, and reproductive-biology research on the species documents this migratory spawning pattern in detail. Commercially and for fisheries stock enhancement, the species is propagated using induced breeding techniques — hypophysation and hormone-induced spawning — the same hatchery methods used across much of the Prochilodus/Semaprochilodus group of migratory food fishes, and it is not documented as breeding under home aquarium conditions.
Aquarium-trade sources are explicit that captive breeding is essentially impossible to replicate at home: the species' complex migratory spawning cycle, tied to river-scale flood dynamics and hormonal triggers, cannot be reproduced in a tank. Prospective keepers should treat this strictly as a non-breeding aquarium species, propagated only at hatchery/commercial scale for the food-fish and stocking trade.
In the aquarium
Prochilodus argenteus is sold in the trade as the flagtail or silver prochilodus, valued for its bright silver body and banded tail, but it is a poor fit for most home aquariums given its documented maximum size of up to 23.5 in SL and 6.8 kg. Keepers taking this species on should plan for a very large, well-filtered tank from the outset and expect it to outgrow typical community setups; this is a river fish built for open water, not a nano or standard community aquarium species.
Diet should follow its natural grazing biology: spirulina/algae wafers and blanched vegetables as the staple, with only occasional protein. It is not a predatory or aggressive fish in the manner of a piranha, but its size alone makes small tankmates and delicate plants poor choices — a large silver grazer needs proportionate space and robust decor. As with other large migratory food-fish characins in this group, it should never be released into open waterways if a keeper can no longer accommodate it.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Prochilodus argenteus as Least Concern, reflecting its continued abundance within the São Francisco River basin where suitable habitat remains. It is not currently considered a species of conservation concern, and it supports a regional fishery within its native range.
The more relevant long-term pressure is not overall extinction risk but the effect of dams on its migratory life history: because this species depends on an upstream spawning run tied to the river's natural flood pulse, dam construction and altered flow regimes across the São Francisco basin disrupt its migration routes even where the species itself remains locally abundant. This is a recurring theme for migratory Prochilodontidae across South America — a Least Concern status at the population level alongside real, basin-specific hydrological threats to the migration that sustains it.
