Taxonomy & naming

Prochilodus britskii was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Antonio Machado-Allison's contemporary, José Lima de Castro, in 1993, placing it in the family Prochilodontidae — the flannelmouth or bocudo characins — within the order Characiformes. The genus Prochilodus is recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) as the authority for valid names in the group, and it sits alongside sister genera such as Semaprochilodus in a family defined by a distinctive protrusible, sucker-like mouth adapted for scraping detritus and biofilm from submerged surfaces.

The species epithet honours the Brazilian ichthyologist Heraldo Britski, a leading authority on Neotropical freshwater fishes at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo. A keeper who did encounter this species should plan for a large, heavily filtered aquarium with a strong current, ample swimming room and a diet weighted toward algae and detritus-replacement foods rather than protein. As with any large, actively grazing characin, biofilm and any live plants in the tank should be expected to take heavy grazing pressure. Given its Vulnerable conservation status and narrow native range, there is also no ethical case for wild collection of this species for the trade.
