Its small, protrusible, sucker-like mouth is adapted for grazing detritus, algae and biofilm off submerged surfaces and sediment, and every year adults undertake a long upstream spawning migration timed to the rains and rising water of September to December. FishBase records a maximum size of 22.5 in standard length, and while a handful of the species reach the aquarium trade as attractively finned juveniles under the name "redfin prochilodus," they quickly outgrow all but the largest home aquaria. Prochilodus costatus was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1850, as part of the flurry of Neotropical freshwater fish descriptions produced during the nineteenth-century survey era. It belongs to the family Prochilodontidae — the flannelmouth characiforms, a small family of detritivorous migratory fishes distinct from the pacus and silver dollars of Serrasalmidae despite superficial resemblance in body shape. The genus Prochilodus itself is defined by the distinctive protrusible, sucker-like mouth used for grazing detritus and algae from submerged substrates, a specialisation shared with the related genus Semaprochilodus.

GBIF occurrence data confirms Prochilodus costatus as a valid, currently accepted species, and it is endemic to the São Francisco River basin of eastern Brazil, a large, biogeographically distinct drainage that supports several fish species found nowhere else. The species has also been recorded as introduced into the neighbouring Jequitinhonha River, likely through stocking or escape associated with regional fisheries and aquaculture activity.

Prospective keepers should treat any "redfin prochilodus" for sale as a fish that will eventually need a very large, ideally pond-scale, setup, not a permanent resident of a standard community tank; this is a case where the small, attractive juvenile is a poor guide to the adult's space requirements.

Diet should lean heavily vegetable: freeze-dried algae, blanched leafy greens, and spirulina-based foods, with meaty items like bloodworms or brine shrimp offered only as a supplement rather than a staple. The species is generally peaceful and non-aggressive, consistent with its grazing ecology, but its eventual bulk means tankmates and enclosure size need to be planned around a large adult fish from the outset, not upgraded reactively. Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Prochilodus costatus as Least Concern in 2018, and FishBase carries the same rating. However, sources describe real and growing pressure on the species: as an endemic of the São Francisco River basin, it depends on an intact, connected river system to complete its long-distance spawning migration, and hydroelectric dam construction across the basin since the 1960s has fragmented that connectivity and degraded habitat, directly threatening the migratory behaviour the species relies on to reproduce.

Despite the Least Concern rating, Prochilodus costatus is also a critical commercial fishery species within its native range, meaning it faces sustained harvest pressure on top of habitat fragmentation. Its introduction into the neighbouring Jequitinhonha River adds a further wrinkle — a population expansion outside its native basin that is not itself a conservation win, since introduced populations of migratory basin endemics can have unpredictable ecological effects on the river systems they are moved into.
