Psectrogaster essequibensis is a small, toothless-jawed characin from the Curimatidae — the flannelmouth curimatas and their relatives — first described from the Essequibo River in Guyana and now known from that basin and the wider Amazon system. It never draws headlines the way its serrasalmid cousins do: there is no bite to fear and no size to outgrow a tank, only a quiet, silvery detritivore that spends its life grazing algae and organic sediment off the substrate of tropical South American rivers. Reaching only about 8 in, it is a modest, unglamorous shoaler whose real story is ecological rather than dramatic — it is one of many small curimatids that keep floodplain rivers clean by processing the microdetritus and algal film that larger predatory characins never touch.

Taxonomy & naming

Psectrogaster essequibensis was described by the English zoologist Albert Günther in 1864, with a type locality on the Essequibo River in Guyana — the river the specific epithet essequibensis directly references. It belongs to the family Curimatidae, a large Neotropical group of small to medium characins characterised by toothless (or functionally toothless) jaws and a specialised, highly protrusible mouth adapted for grazing detritus and algae off submerged surfaces and sediment, rather than biting prey or plant matter outright.

The genus Psectrogaster sits within Curimatidae alongside related detritivorous genera such as Curimata, Curimatella and Steindachnerina, and its members are broadly similar in body plan — deep-bodied, silvery, compressed fish that are easy to overlook next to the family's flashier serrasalmid and characid relatives. A systematic review of the genus by Vari (1989) is the standard taxonomic reference for the group, though the source consulted for this article could not confirm additional detail from that work beyond its status as the authoritative treatment. The species is not known by any established common or trade name in the aquarium hobby.

Morphology

Psectrogaster essequibensis is a small, laterally compressed, silvery characin typical of the curimatid body plan — deep through the body relative to its length, with a small, underslung, toothless mouth suited to grazing rather than biting. FishBase records a maximum size of 8 in standard length (caudal peduncle measurement), with documented museum specimens in the 5.5–7 in range, making it a modest-sized fish by characin standards and considerably smaller than the pacus, dorados or true piranhas that share its order.

As with most Curimatidae, the fins are unremarkable — no elaborate colouration, extensions or dimorphic markings have been documented for this species — and identification within the genus relies on more technical characters (fin-ray counts, scale counts, mouth and gut morphology) rather than obvious external field marks.

Habitat

The species is documented from the Essequibo River basin in Guyana, its type locality, and more broadly from the Rio Amazonas basin. The Essequibo is a warm lowland tropical river system, with water temperatures in its catchment typically running 84–97 °F at the surface, draining a landscape of low coastal plain, forested hills and highland sources in the Pakaraima, Kanuku and Acarai mountains. Conditions across its Neotropical range are generally the slightly acidic, soft water typical of Amazonian and Guianan river systems, though no site-specific pH or hardness figures were located for this species.

Like other curimatids, P. essequibensis is presumed to favour the slower, structured margins and floodplain habitats where fine organic detritus and algal films accumulate, rather than fast open channel — this follows from its feeding ecology (see Feeding) rather than from direct habitat observation in the sources consulted.

Feeding

Psectrogaster essequibensis is a detritivore and algae-grazer, not a predator or an omnivore in the piranha sense. This diet has no documented aquarium-trade context, since the species is not established in the hobby, but it points clearly to what a hypothetical captive diet would need to emphasise: fine, plant- and algae-based foods and grazing opportunities (biofilm-covered surfaces, spirulina-based flake or wafer) rather than the meaty, high-protein fare suited to predatory serrasalmids.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Psectrogaster essequibensis in the sources available. Curimatidae as a family are not generally known for elaborate courtship, and without species-specific data this account cannot describe pairing, triggers or timing — data sparse.

Breeding

Breeding biology for this species is essentially undocumented. The systematic literature consulted (Vari's 1989 review of the genus) is cited as the authoritative taxonomic reference but did not yield reproductive detail, and no aquaculture or aquarium-breeding accounts were found.
