Psectrogaster rutiloides is a modest, deep-bodied silver characin from the Amazon basin, not a piranha and not a pacu — it belongs to the Curimatidae, a family of small-mouthed detritivores that graze fine organic sediment and biofilm rather than hunt or shred plants. Wild adults top out around 7 in and roughly 148 g, and the species is caught in real commercial volume in Peru's Ucayali and Loreto fisheries under the local name "chiochio." Taxonomy & naming

Psectrogaster rutiloides was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1858. It sits in the genus Psectrogaster within the family Curimatidae — the toothless, detritivorous "curimatas" — inside the order Characiformes, the same broad order that contains the piranhas and pacus of Serrasalmidae but a very different feeding guild. The Catalogue of Life confirms the authority (Kner, 1858) and the placement in Curimatidae.

Curimatid taxonomy has seen its share of revision as material from Amazonian tributaries has been re-examined, and species-level identification within Psectrogaster can be difficult in the field because several congeners share a similar silvery, laterally compressed body plan.
