Leporinus ecuadorensis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Arthur W. Henn in 1916, part of the wave of early-twentieth-century American ichthyological expeditions that catalogued the freshwater fishes of western South America. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family whose members are named for their characteristic oblique or fully vertical, head-down feeding posture.
The genus Leporinus is large and, like much of Anostomidae, has seen taxonomic revision in recent decades as researchers work through species long lumped together by superficial similarity; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) remains the reference for the currently valid name and synonymy.
