Pygocentrus cariba, the Orinoco piranha, is the Orinoco-basin counterpart to the better-known red-bellied piranha, sharing the same deep-bodied, silver-flanked shape and scissoring, interlocking teeth but confined to the Orinoco River basin's lowland rivers and tributaries rather than the Amazon. Like its relatives it is a nervous shoaling fish whose fearsome reputation outruns its everyday behaviour — it scavenges, nips fins and only mobs prey under scarcity or crowding, not as routine hunting. In the aquarium it needs a real group in a large, well-covered tank rather than solitary confinement, and, because piranhas of this genus are restricted or banned in many jurisdictions, a keeper must check local law before acquiring one and never release the fish. Reliable information on this species is sparser than for its Amazonian cousin, so this account says less where the record is thin rather than guessing.

Taxonomy & naming

Pygocentrus cariba was first described by the Prussian naturalist Alexander von Humboldt in 1821 from material collected during his South American expeditions, making it one of the earliest-named piranhas. It belongs to the family Serrasalmidae — the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Pygocentrus, the true piranhas distinguished from the family's much larger pacu lineages by a single row of tricuspid, blade-like teeth and a predatory jaw.

The species has passed through several taxonomic combinations, having at times been placed in Serrasalmus (as Serrasalmus cariba) and in the now-abandoned genus Rooseveltiella (as Rooseveltiella cariba) before Serrasalmidae's broader taxonomic revision consolidated it, on modern cladistic grounds, under Pygocentrus alongside P. nattereri, P. piraya and P. palometa. It is frequently confused in the trade and in the field with P. nattereri, which it closely resembles; the two are best told apart by range, since P. cariba is restricted to the Orinoco basin while P. nattereri belongs to the Amazon, Paraguay-Paraná and Essequibo systems. The common name "Orinoco piranha" reflects that distribution.

Morphology

Pygocentrus cariba shows the classic piranha profile: a deep, laterally compressed, roughly diamond-shaped body, a blunt head with a strongly underslung lower jaw, and a continuous row of sharp-edged, interlocking triangular teeth in both jaws that shear like scissors. As in other Pygocentrus, teeth are replaced in sets rather than singly, so the bite is rarely out of commission. FishBase records a maximum size of 11 in total length and roughly 560 g in weight, noticeably smaller than the exceptional wild outliers reported for P. nattereri, though most aquarium specimens of either species run well under their maximum.

Colouration follows the familiar piranha pattern of a silver body flushing to orange-to-near-black on the throat, belly and lower fins in mature fish, with breeding condition reportedly intensifying the colour toward near-black. Females grow larger than males. Beyond that, detailed published morphometric comparisons distinguishing P. cariba from P. nattereri are sparse in the available record, and this account does not attempt to invent finer identification marks than the sources support.

Habitat

Pygocentrus cariba is native to the Orinoco River basin of South America, where it is widely distributed across the basin's lowland rivers and tributaries rather than confined to a single sub-drainage. Its type locality was not precisely specified in the original description, but the species' documented range sits squarely within Orinoco lowlands shared by Venezuela and Colombia.

Detailed water-chemistry data specific to this species is sparse in the sources reviewed here; broadly, Orinoco lowland habitats of this kind are warm, seasonally fluctuating floodplain rivers and tributaries, consistent with the pattern seen across Pygocentrus generally, but this account does not assign firm temperature or pH figures beyond what the cache actually supports.

Feeding

Pygocentrus cariba is an obligate carnivore and, like its congeners, an opportunistic scavenger and fin-nipper rather than a relentless pack hunter. In the aquarium it takes quality carnivore pellets, freshwater fish fillet (tilapia and pollock are commonly cited), shrimp and prawn, mussel, squid, earthworms, krill and insect larvae readily.

Keepers are cautioned against feeding mammalian meats such as beef heart, which are nutritionally unbalanced for a fish physiology, and against relying on live "feeder" fish, which carry a real disease and water-quality risk. As with other true piranhas, the "feeding frenzy" behaviour associated with the genus in popular media is a response to scarcity or an easy, concentrated food source, not an everyday hunting strategy.

Mating

Breeding behaviour has not been recorded in the wild for Pygocentrus cariba, and the available hobby literature explicitly flags this as unrecorded rather than offering a documented account. What is reported is inference from its close relative: courtship and spawning are expected to broadly follow the pattern seen in P. nattereri, plausibly cued by rising temperature and softening, more acidic water that mimics the onset of a flood season, with a pair separating from the group and becoming markedly territorial beforehand.

External sexual dimorphism is not well documented for this species beyond the observation that females grow larger than males; there is no reported reliable colour or fin difference between the sexes, so pairs are best identified by behaviour rather than appearance, as in other Pygocentrus.

Breeding

No confirmed, published account of captive breeding for Pygocentrus cariba was found in the sources reviewed here, and this article does not assume one. Hobby references note only that its breeding is "likely" to follow the pattern of P. nattereri — a substrate-spawning egg-scatterer in which a paired male and female clear and defend a nest site among roots or vegetation, the female releases adhesive eggs that the male fertilises, and the eggs are guarded and fanned at the nest, most often by the male, until they hatch within a few days.

That pattern is well documented for P. nattereri, which is bred both by hobbyists and commercially for the trade, but it remains an inference for P. cariba rather than a confirmed observation for this species specifically. It is emphatically not a mouthbrooder or bubble-nest builder. Keepers attempting to breed this species should expect to work from the P. nattereri template while treating actual spawning success as noteworthy and worth documenting.

In the aquarium

As with other Pygocentrus, the single most important welfare fact for a keeper is that Pygocentrus cariba is a shoaling fish: juveniles shoal for safety and adults settle into loose groups with a social hierarchy, so a lone specimen in a bare tank is a stressed, defensive animal rather than a safely "tamed" one. Ample space, excellent filtration and thoughtful, well-covered aquascaping (driftwood, roots, dense planting) are called out specifically as requirements for keeping the species successfully, consistent with its maximum size of roughly 11 in.

Diet should follow the varied, meaty menu described above, never exclusively live feeder fish. As with all true piranhas, the jaws are genuinely capable and the fish should be handled and moved with care rather than bare hands or thin nets. Finally, piranhas of this genus are restricted, permit-controlled or banned outright in many U.S. states and countries because of concern over establishment in local waterways — a prospective keeper must check local and state law before acquiring one, and must never release a piranha into open water.

Conservation

Pygocentrus cariba is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, with the most recent assessment (led by Lasso) dated 2023. The species remains relatively abundant across its Orinoco basin range despite the general pressures facing the region's freshwater fish — deforestation, damming and declining water quality among them — none of which have yet been judged sufficient to move the species out of Least Concern.

Because its native range is narrower than P. nattereri's (the Orinoco basin rather than the Amazon, Paraguay-Paraná and Essequibo systems combined), P. cariba is inherently more exposed to basin-specific pressures than its wider-ranging relative, even though its current status is not threatened. The sources reviewed here do not document a significant aquarium-trade collection pressure or an invasive-species record for this species outside its native range.
