Taxonomy & naming
Pygocentrus nattereri was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1858, honouring the Austrian naturalist and collector Johann Natterer, who spent nearly two decades collecting specimens across Brazil in the early nineteenth century. It belongs to the family Serrasalmidae — the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — within the order Characiformes, and to the small genus Pygocentrus, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as holding four valid species of true piranhas distinguished from the much larger "pacu" lineages in the same family by their single row of tricuspid, blade-like teeth and predatory jaw.
Pygocentrus nattereri is the most widely distributed and most frequently kept member of its genus, and it is often confused in the trade with its close relative P. cariba and with juveniles of the black piranha, Serrasalmus rhombeus; reliable identification rests on body depth, the extent and shade of the red on the belly and throat, and the humeral (shoulder) spot pattern, all of which vary with age, mood and population. The common name "red-bellied piranha" describes the adult colouring; "piranha" itself is a Tupi–Guaraní word, discussed further below.
Morphology
The red-bellied piranha has the classic piranha silhouette: a deep, laterally compressed, almost diamond-shaped body, a blunt head with a strongly underslung lower jaw, and a continuous row of sharp-edged, interlocking triangular teeth in both jaws that work like a pair of scissors. The teeth are famously replaced in sets rather than one at a time, so a piranha is rarely without a functional bite. FishBase records a maximum published length of 19.5 in standard length for the species, but that figure is an exceptional wild outlier; most wild adults run closer to 10–12 in, and aquarium fish are typically smaller still, commonly 6–10 in.
Colouration is the species' calling card: juveniles are silver with dark speckling, and as they mature the flanks develop a shimmering, sometimes purplish-silver sheen studded with gold-and-black flecks, while the throat, belly and anal-fin region flush deep orange to blood-red. Colour intensity varies with mood, water chemistry and population — some river forms run more orange than red — so it is not a reliable field mark on its own. Habitat
Pygocentrus nattereri has the broadest range of any piranha species, occurring across the Amazon River basin, the Paraguay-Paraná basin, northeastern Brazilian coastal river systems and the Essequibo basin, spanning Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, Peru, Guyana and neighbouring countries. Within that range it turns up in a wide variety of lowland habitats — river channels, floodplain lakes, oxbows, flooded forest and slow backwaters — and it tolerates the strong seasonal swings of Amazonian hydrology, moving into flooded vegetation during high water and concentrating in receding pools during the dry season.
Water across this range is generally warm, soft to moderately hard and mildly acidic to neutral, broadly in the range of pH 5.5–7.5 and roughly 73–82 °F, though local conditions vary considerably between blackwater, whitewater and clearwater tributaries. Structure matters as much as chemistry: submerged wood, roots and dense marginal vegetation give the shoal cover to retreat into, which is consistent with its behaviour as a nervous, ambush-oriented fish rather than an open-water pursuit predator.
Feeding
The popular image of the red-bellied piranha as an indiscriminate flesh-stripping predator does not match the diet biologists actually document. Stomach-content studies across its range consistently show an opportunistic omnivore: fin fragments and scales taken from live fish, whole small fish, aquatic and terrestrial insects, crustaceans, seeds and fruit that fall from the flooded forest canopy, and a substantial amount of carrion. Fin-and-scale nipping — biting a chunk from a passing fish and moving on rather than killing it outright — is a well-documented, distinctive part of the diet, and it is a large part of why the species has such an outsized reputation relative to its actual predatory impact.
The "feeding frenzy" of documentary footage is real but situational: it is associated with food scarcity, crowding, or an easy, concentrated food source such as a stranded carcass in a shrinking dry-season pool, not with everyday foraging. In the aquarium, red-bellied piranhas take a varied diet readily — fish fillet, prawn, mussel, quality carnivore pellets and occasional whole feeder fish — and keepers are cautioned against feeding exclusively live fish or fatty mammalian meat such as beef heart, both of which cause nutritional problems over time.
Mating
Courtship in Pygocentrus nattereri is described in hobby and aquaculture accounts as a period of circling and close pairing between a ripe male and female, typically triggered by a rise in temperature and softer, more acidic water that mimics the onset of the flood season. A pair (or the dominant pair within a conditioned group) separates from the rest of the shoal and becomes noticeably more territorial in the days before spawning, often clearing a patch of substrate or fine root mass of debris.
External sexual dimorphism is minimal and not reliably documented — mature, gravid females may appear fuller-bodied when in spawning condition, but there is no consistent colour or fin difference between the sexes, and most breeders identify pairs by behaviour (pairing off, colour deepening, territorial pairing) rather than by appearance.
Breeding
Pygocentrus nattereri is a substrate-spawning egg-scatterer, not a mouthbrooder or bubble-nest builder. A paired male and female clear and defend a nest site on fine sediment or amid submerged roots and vegetation, and the female releases adhesive eggs — reports from commercial and hobby breeding cite clutches that can run into the thousands — which the male fertilises over the site. The eggs are guarded and fanned at the nest, most commonly by the male, though accounts vary on how much the female continues to participate; both parents can become markedly aggressive in defence of the site, driving off tankmates and even other piranhas.
Eggs hatch in roughly two to three days at warm tropical temperatures, and the tiny fry cling to the nest site for a further few days on their yolk sac before dispersing to feed on infusoria and, quickly, on brine shrimp nauplii and finely crushed foods. The species is bred both by hobbyists in large, well-conditioned groups and commercially for the aquarium trade, which is one reason wild collection pressure for this particular piranha is comparatively low relative to its enormous natural range and abundance.
In the aquarium
The single most important fact for a prospective keeper is that Pygocentrus nattereri is a shoaling fish, and a lone specimen in a bare tank is a stressed, defensive fish, not a safely "tamed" one. Keepers should aim for a real group — commonly cited as four or more individuals — in a large aquarium (typically 300+ litres for a young group, considerably more as they mature) with dense cover from driftwood, roots or robust plants, dim lighting and minimal disturbance. A settled, well-fed group in adequate space is markedly calmer than the same fish kept singly or crowded; inter-individual nipping and fin damage within the shoal is the realistic day-to-day risk, and it drops sharply with more space and more cover, not less company.
Water should be kept warm (roughly 73–82 °F) and soft to neutral, mildly acidic (pH around 5.5–7.5), with strong filtration to handle a large bioload and messy feeding. The jaws and teeth are genuinely formidable and the fish should always be moved by container rather than net — a piranha's bite through mesh, or through an incautious hand at feeding time, is a real hazard, not folklore. Tankmates should be limited to fish too large or too fast to be seen as food or fin-nipping targets, and many keepers house the species alone. Finally, and critically: piranhas of this genus are restricted, permit-controlled or outright banned in many U.S. states and a number of countries because of concern over establishment in local waterways, so a keeper must check local and state law before acquiring one — and must never release a piranha into open water under any circumstances.
Conservation
Pygocentrus nattereri is not a species of conservation concern; the IUCN Red List's most recent assessment places it in the Least Concern category, reflecting its very wide South American distribution, its broad habitat tolerance, and populations that remain abundant across the Amazon, Paraguay-Paraná and Essequibo basins. It supports substantial subsistence and small-scale commercial fisheries in parts of its range and is also farmed and bred for the aquarium trade, both of which reduce reliance on wild collection.
The more notable conservation story runs the other way: because of its hardiness and predatory reputation, P. nattereri has been introduced outside its native range — including into parts of the southern United States and elsewhere — through aquarium releases, and it is treated as a potential invasive species risk in non-native waters, which is the core reason behind the legal restrictions described above. Within its native range, the general pressures facing Amazonian and Pantanal freshwater fish — damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation and water-quality change — are relevant long-term watch items even though the species itself is not currently threatened.
