Salminus franciscanus was formally described by Flávio Lima and Heraldo Britski in 2007, based on specimens from the rio São Francisco basin in eastern Brazil, even though local fishers and earlier ichthyologists had recognised a distinct São Francisco "dourado" for well over a century before that. It belongs to the family Bryconidae within the order Characiformes; older literature sometimes places the genus Salminus in Characidae or, in some outdated hobby sources, is confused with the unrelated Serrasalmidae (piranhas and pacus) — the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the current Bryconidae placement, and Salminus franciscanus is treated as a valid, distinct species from its better-known relative Salminus brasiliensis.
The genus Salminus contains a small number of large, predatory South American characins collectively called "dorado" or "dourado" (Portuguese/Spanish for "golden") for their brassy flanks. Prospective keepers who encounter juveniles in the trade should size their plans around the adult, not the appealing few-centimetre fish in the shop, and should have a credible long-term housing plan (or decline to buy) before acquiring one.
As an active, powerful piscivorous predator it is best kept alone or with tankmates too large to be viewed as prey, with robust filtration to handle a heavy bioload and a diet of fresh or whole prey fish and crustaceans rather than dried foods. Given the near-total absence of captive breeding, most specimens reaching the trade are wild-collected or farm-raised for food markets rather than aquarium-bred, which is an added reason to think carefully about acquiring one; a golden dorado, like a pacu, should never be released into open water if it outgrows its keeper's facilities.
