Salminus brasiliensis, the golden dorado, is one of South America's great freshwater game fish: a heavy-bodied, gold-flanked characin of the Paraná, Paraguay and Uruguay river systems that grows past a metre in length and hunts other fish with real power and speed. It has nothing in common with the piranhas and pacus it shares a broad family tree with — no shoaling nervousness, no fruit-and-seed grazing — this is an apex predator built like a torpedo, prized by anglers from Argentina to Bolivia and by fisheries scientists for its long upstream spawning migrations. The dorado is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense: it needs open river, it never breeds in captivity, and adults simply outgrow anything a hobbyist could offer. This article covers the documented biology of a species that belongs in a river, not a tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Salminus brasiliensis was described by Georges Cuvier in 1816 and sits in the family Bryconidae within the order Characiformes — a family of mostly predatory, fast-swimming characins that includes the Brycon "jataupe" tetras, separate from the pacu- and piranha-dominated Serrasalmidae. The genus Salminus currently holds a handful of valid species recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), all large predatory characins native to South America and often grouped under the common name "dorado" (Spanish/Portuguese for "golden").

The species has long been popularly known simply as "dorado" across its range, a name that causes frequent confusion with the unrelated marine dorado (mahi-mahi, Coryphaena hippurus) and with other Salminus species such as S. franciscanus and S. hilarii, which occupy different river basins. Older literature sometimes used "Salminus maxillosus" as a synonym for this species; current taxonomic authority treats S. brasiliensis as the valid name for the Paraná-Paraguay-Uruguay dorado.

Morphology

The golden dorado has a robust, fusiform, powerfully muscled body built for sustained fast swimming and ambush predation, with a large terminal mouth armed with strong conical teeth well suited to seizing and holding other fish. Colouration is the species' namesake feature: deep golden-yellow flanks with a silvery sheen, a series of dark longitudinal stripes toward the tail, and a bright orange-to-red caudal and anal fin that make an adult fish unmistakable in clear water.

Size is substantial by characin standards. FishBase records a maximum of 39.5 in standard length and 31.4 kg for the species, and Seriously Fish notes females reported to exceed 55 in total length — among the largest characins kept track of anywhere in South America. Growth is rapid in early life: males show a higher initial growth rate reaching roughly 27 in standard length, while females grow more slowly but ultimately reach greater lengths, around 30.5 in standard length and beyond. Exploited wild populations typically run 3–10 kg, with exceptional specimens exceeding 30 kg.

Habitat

Salminus brasiliensis is native to the Paraná, Paraguay and Uruguay river basins and the Laguna dos Patos drainage in southern Brazil, with populations also documented in the upper Chaparé and Mamoré river basins of Bolivia. Its range spans Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina, placing it firmly in the subtropical La Plata drainage rather than the classic Amazonian lowlands most characins are associated with.

The species is potamodromous — it migrates entirely within freshwater river systems rather than to the sea — moving through main river channels and larger tributaries and undertaking long-distance upstream migrations tied to the flood pulse and spawning season (see "Mating"). Seriously Fish records a tolerated water temperature range of roughly 72–82 °F, cooler on average than typical Amazonian blackwater characins, consistent with the more temperate, seasonally variable Paraná-Paraguay-Uruguay system it inhabits.

Feeding

The dorado is a dedicated piscivore, unlike the omnivorous grazers that make up much of this group. Seriously Fish describes it as highly piscivorous even as a juvenile, accepting small prawns and lancefish early on before shifting to a diet of live or whole dead fish as it grows; adults in captivity are typically fed large whole fish such as trout. In the wild it hunts smaller characins and other fish in open water and along river margins, using its speed and strong jaws to run down prey rather than grazing detritus or plant matter the way many of its relatives in this group do.

This predatory diet is central to the species' reputation as a game fish: anglers target dorado with lures and baitfish specifically because it strikes hard and fights strongly, behaviour consistent with an active mid-water hunter rather than a bottom-grazing detritivore.

Mating

Reproduction in Salminus brasiliensis is tied to a long-distance spawning migration rather than pair formation or courtship display of the kind seen in substrate-spawning characins. Reports from fisheries and aquaculture sources describe adults moving upstream on the order of 249 mi to reach spawning grounds, triggered by rising water temperature, the seasonal flood pulse and food availability in spring and summer. Females mature at roughly 4–5 years of age (FishBase gives a length at maturity around 15 in), and lifespan in the wild is recorded up to about 9 years.

There is no meaningful pairing behaviour documented for this species outside the migratory context — spawning is a mass, broadcast event tied to migration and flood timing, not a defended nest site or a courted partner, and it is this migratory dependency that makes the species essentially impossible to breed outside its natural river system.

Breeding

Salminus brasiliensis is a migratory food-fish spawner, not a species bred in home aquaria. In the wild, mature females release very large numbers of eggs — reports cite up to roughly two million eggs per female — near the water's surface during the upstream spawning migration, fertilised by accompanying males; there is no parental care of eggs or fry. Commercial hatcheries and government fisheries programmes across Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay do propagate the species, but only through hormone-induced spawning of wild-caught or pond-held broodstock, mimicking the migratory trigger artificially rather than allowing natural pairing.

Home aquarium breeding is explicitly described in the hobby literature as impossible, and should not be attempted or expected: the species requires the scale of a real river migration to spawn, and the enormous adult size involved rules out captive reproduction entirely outside specialised aquaculture facilities. Any dorado fry or juveniles reaching the aquarium trade originate from wild collection or commercial hatchery stock, never from home breeding.

In the aquarium

The golden dorado is not a realistic aquarium fish, and this needs to be stated plainly before anything else: it reaches at least a metre in length and over 30 kg, it is a dedicated open-water predator that needs to swim hard and far, and it cannot be bred, meaningfully conditioned, or kept in anything resembling a normal home tank. Any specimen offered in the trade is a wild-collected or hatchery-reared juvenile that will rapidly outgrow all but the largest specialist or public-aquarium systems, and it should never be purchased on the expectation of long-term captive care in a home setting.

Where very large specialist systems do house dorado, strong water movement, ample swimming length, robust filtration for a heavy piscivorous bioload, and large whole-fish feeding are non-negotiable; the species has no tolerance for cramped, still water. This is fundamentally a river fish and a food/game fish for its native range, not a display animal for the aquarium hobby, and prospective keepers are better served admiring it in angling and conservation literature than attempting to house one.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List's global assessment (2020) places Salminus brasiliensis in the Least Concern category, reflecting its wide distribution across the Paraná, Paraguay, Uruguay and Laguna dos Patos systems and its continued abundance across much of that range. It supports major commercial fisheries, recreational "catch and release" sport angling, and aquaculture programmes across Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia.

That global status masks serious regional decline. Populations in significant parts of the upper Paraná basin — the Grande, Tietê and Paranapanema Rivers — are reported as vulnerable or virtually extirpated, and the species is considered highly vulnerable in parts of the La Plata River system, largely as a consequence of damming, which blocks the long-distance upstream migrations the species depends on to spawn. The dorado is consequently a flagship species for river-connectivity and dam-mitigation conservation efforts in the region even though its overall global Red List category remains Least Concern.
