Characidium satoi is a small, slender darter characin from a single tributary system of Brazil's Rio São Francisco basin, described in 2015 by Melo and Oyakawa. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae, the South American darters, whose members perch on rocks and gravel and dart between resting spots rather than swimming in open water the way most tetras do. At a maximum of 1.5 in it is a genuinely nano fish, built for fast, well-oxygenated riffles rather than the still, planted community tanks most characins are sold for, and it makes its living picking off tiny invertebrates rather than grazing or scavenging. It is not a piranha, a pacu or anything resembling the more famous members of this atlas — it earns its place here as one of the smaller, quieter South American darters, a stream-bed specialist that is effectively unknown in the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Characidium satoi was described in 2015 by Melo and Oyakawa, part of a wave of Characidium species descriptions from Brazil over the last two decades that has substantially expanded a genus once treated as containing far fewer, more widely distributed species. It sits in the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters — a group historically bounced between subfamily status within Characidae and full family rank; current treatments, including the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), recognise Crenuchidae as a distinct family that includes both the Characidiinae (Characidium and relatives) and the Crenuchinae (Crenuchus, Poecilocharax), the latter the cave- and leaf-spawning sailfin characins kept as gentle blackwater nano fish.

Characidium is by far the larger of the two lineages and is defined by a bottom-perching body plan rather than a shared showy fin display. C. satoi is known only from its type locality in the Rio Curral das Éguas, a tributary of the Rio Abaeté within the greater Rio São Francisco drainage of Brazil, and as with many recently described stream darters, its range has not been broadly resurveyed since description.

Morphology

Characidium satoi is a slim, elongate, faintly torpedo-shaped fish that tops out at 1.5 in standard length, in keeping with the small-bodied, cryptic build typical of Characidium. Like its relatives it lacks the deep, laterally compressed profile of open-water tetras; the body is built for holding position against current and making short, quick darts between perches rather than sustained swimming.

Sexual dimorphism is marked in this species: males carry hooks on the pectoral and pelvic fins, a feature used across Characidium to grip the female or substrate during spawning, and males are described as darker overall with less distinct patterning than the more clearly marked females and juveniles. Precise details of flank barring and fin colouration beyond this are not documented in the available literature.

Habitat

The species is endemic to a single known locality, the Rio Curral das Éguas, a tributary of the Rio Abaeté in the Rio São Francisco basin of Brazil. FishBase describes the habitat as fast-flowing rapids with a mosaic of shallow riffles no more than about 1 ft deep alternating with pools exceeding 7 ft, a classic stream-darter setting of alternating fast, shallow, oxygen-rich water and deeper refuge pools.

No detailed water-chemistry readings from the type locality are documented in the sources reviewed here. Characidium as a genus is generally associated with soft, neutral-to-slightly-acidic Neotropical stream water, and the São Francisco basin's headwater and tributary streams typically run cooler and better oxygenated than lowland Amazonian floodplain water — but specific pH, hardness or temperature figures for this exact site are not available, so keepers should treat those parameters as an informed inference rather than a documented fact for this species.

Feeding

Characidium satoi is a micro-predator, not a grazer or scavenger. FishBase assigns the species a trophic level of 3.4, consistent with a diet of small aquatic invertebrates rather than plant matter or detritus. Darter characins in general are sit-and-wait hunters that perch on rocks or gravel in current and dart out to snatch passing insect larvae, chironomid (bloodworm) larvae and other tiny invertebrates drifting past.

In the aquarium, Characidium species are reported to take frozen bloodworm readily as a staple, along with other small live and frozen foods such as microworm, baby brine shrimp and cyclops; they frequently ignore dry flake food, which does not resemble anything in their natural diet or hunting style.

Mating

No species-specific courtship description for Characidium satoi was found in the sources reviewed. Across the genus, males use the hooks on their pectoral and pelvic fins — present in this species — to grip the female during spawning, and breeding is generally triggered by an approximation of stream conditions: soft, slightly acidic water and the presence of fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, which the pair use as a scattering site.

The pronounced sexual dimorphism in C. satoi (darker, less patterned males versus more distinctly marked females) is the clearest external cue for identifying a breeding-condition pair, though this has not been documented specifically as a spawning signal for this species.

Breeding

Characidium satoi has not been documented as bred in the aquarium, and no species-specific breeding account exists in the sources reviewed. As an egg-scattering darter in the Characidiinae lineage of Crenuchidae, it is expected to follow the pattern reported for other Characidium species: eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants or fine substrate in soft, acidic water, with no parental care once eggs are released. This differs from its family-mates in the Crenuchinae (Crenuchus, Poecilocharax), which are cave- or leaf-spawners with brief male guarding of the clutch.

For a related species, C. fasciatum, hobby accounts describe clutches of roughly 150 eggs hatching in 36–48 hours, with fry starting on infusoria before graduating to baby brine shrimp; this is offered as a plausible reference point for the genus rather than a documented fact for C. satoi itself, which should be treated as effectively unbred in captivity.

In the aquarium

Characidium satoi is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade and no dedicated care reports for the species were found. Based on its 1.5 in adult size and the care profile documented for the genus, it would suit a small, well-filtered nano setup with strong water flow rather than the still, densely planted tanks typical of many characins — this is a rheophilic stream fish, and stagnant water is a poor match for its biology. A congener, C. fasciatum, is recommended at a minimum of 30 US gal for a group of six or more, which gives a reasonable, though unconfirmed, benchmark for this similarly sized relative.

Darter characins in general do best with a sand-or-gravel bottom, smooth stones or driftwood to perch on, and good oxygenation; they are not aggressive shoalers in the tetra sense but hold loose, scattered territories along the substrate and current lines. Given the total absence of trade or hobby documentation for C. satoi specifically, anyone attempting to keep it should treat every parameter above as inferred from the genus rather than confirmed for this species, and should be confident of the fish's wild provenance given its extremely restricted known range.

Conservation

Characidium satoi is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, with an assessment dated November 2020. This reflects both the species' very recent description (2015) and its currently known distribution, which is limited to a single tributary system — the Rio Curral das Éguas, part of the Rio Abaeté drainage within the Rio São Francisco basin of Brazil — that does not appear to have been broadly resurveyed since the type series was collected.

A single-locality endemic in a small Brazilian stream system carries an inherent conservation risk regardless of formal listing status: localized pressures such as water abstraction, sedimentation, damming or agricultural runoff in the São Francisco basin could affect the entire known population before the species is reassessed. There is no indication in the available sources that C. satoi enters the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not a documented concern for this species.
