Taxonomy & naming
Schizodon platae was described by the American ichthyologist Samuel Garman in 1890. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family whose members are named for the oblique, head-down posture many species adopt while grazing. The genus Schizodon is one of several anostomid genera (alongside Leporinus, Anostomus and Laemolyta) recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) as the current authority for valid names in this group.
The species epithet platae refers to the Río de la Plata (the La Plata basin), the type locality and core native range of the species, placing it among the characins of the temperate-to-subtropical Paraná-Paraguay-La Plata drainage rather than the classic Amazonian fauna most anostomids are drawn from. Because the La Plata basin runs cooler and more seasonal than tropical Amazonian waters, this species should not automatically be kept at the top of the tropical range — moderate, stable temperatures reflecting its subtropical origin are more appropriate than assuming blackwater-Amazon conditions.
