Cyphocharax saladensis was described by the German aquarist and ichthyologist Hermann Meinken in 1933. It belongs to the family Curimatidae — the curimatas, a large Neotropical family of small to medium detritivorous characiforms — placed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) in the genus Cyphocharax, one of the most speciose curimatid genera with several dozen recognised species spread across South America.

A phylogenetic study (published via ResearchGate) treats C. saladensis as the type of a distinct, well-supported clade within Cyphocharax and describes it as occurring into the upper Rio Paraguai basin, alongside a newly described sister species endemic to that same drainage; this reflects the ongoing revision of curimatid relationships rather than any change to C. saladensis's own valid name. The genus name combines Greek kyphos ("hunched" or "humped") with charax (a spiny fish name used broadly across characiforms), a nod to the gently arched dorsal profile typical of the genus; the species epithet saladensis is a locality-derived name, referencing a "Salado" river or stream — a name used for several watercourses across the species' Argentine and southern Brazilian range.

Morphology

Cyphocharax saladensis is a small, laterally compressed curimatid with the typical genus silhouette: a moderately deep body, a small, subterminal, downturned mouth adapted for grazing surfaces rather than seizing prey, and a single row of small, fine teeth suited to scraping rather than biting. FishBase records a maximum published size of 4 in total length and a maximum weight of around 11.7 g — a genuinely small fish even by the modest standards of minor characins, and far removed from the piranhas and pacus that dominate this family's public image.
