Taxonomy & naming
Loricariichthys platymetopon was described by Isbrücker and Nijssen in 1979 in Bijdragen tot de Dierkunde (volume 48, number 2, pp. 203, figs. 7–8). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Loricariichthys platymetopon Isbrücker & Nijssen, 1979, with no currently accepted synonyms. The type locality is Lago de Ypacarai, San Bernardino, 25°16'S, 57°16'W, in the Río Paraguay system, Paraguay.
The genus Loricariichthys Bleeker, 1862 is placed in the tribe Loricariini of subfamily Loricariinae (Armbruster, 2004). It is defined by a combination of characters including the flattened head, broad rostrum, and in many species — most strikingly in L. platymetopon — the hypertrophied lower lip of breeding males that functions as the egg-carrying organ. The specific epithet platymetopon is a compound from Greek: platys (broad, flat) + metopon (forehead, brow), referring to the species' notably flattened and broadened head profile.
L. platymetopon is one of some 20 recognised species within Loricariichthys. Its natural distribution in the Río Paraguay, lower and middle Río Paraná, and Río Uruguay makes it a characteristic element of the La Plata basin fish fauna. A published reproductive study (Cardim et al., Biotemas 2019) documents the species' behaviour as an invasive in the upper Río Paraná following the hydrological disruption caused by Itaipu Dam.
Morphology
Adults reach up to 15 in total length (male/unsexed) and 15.5 in TL (female), with a maximum published weight of 311 g — making this one of the largest members of its genus. The body is the characteristic loricariine shape: strongly flattened ventrally with a broad, depressed head and a tapering posterior that ends in a moderately elongated caudal filament. The dorsal surface is clothed in rows of keeled bony scutes; the ventral surface is largely naked, which aids the suction-cup adhesion that these fish use on river bottoms.
The most striking morphological feature is the lower lip of breeding males. In L. platymetopon — as in several other Loricariichthys species and in genus Loricaria — the male's lower lip undergoes dramatic hypertrophy at breeding condition, forming a wide, pad-like, fleshy structure that creates the surface against which the egg mass is held. This lip expansion is visible even in subadult males and becomes dramatic in reproductively active individuals. Females have a distinctly narrower, less developed lower lip, making sexing straightforward in mature fish.
General coloration is brown to olive-brown above with variable dark mottling, pale below. PlanetCatfish's close-up images confirm the distinctly broad, flat head profile that the specific epithet commemorates. Maturity in females is reached at approximately 6 in standard length (FishBase data).
Habitat
The native range of Loricariichthys platymetopon covers the La Plata River basin of South America — specifically the Río Paraguay, the lower and middle Río Paraná, and the Río Uruguay systems in Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. PlanetCatfish also lists secondary records from Orinoco and Guyana drainage localities, suggesting either a broader natural range than originally delimited or misidentifications at range margins.
The species inhabits large, slow to moderate-flowing lowland rivers and their associated floodplain environments — oxbow lakes (lagoas), flooded marshes, and tributary channels. Cardim et al. (2019) studied its reproductive ecology in the upper Río Paraná floodplain (into which the species invaded post-Itaipu), finding that it preferentially reproduces in shallow floodplain lakes (lagoons) rather than main river channels, consistent with a preference for calmer, warmer, well-vegetated floodplain habitats during breeding.
FishBase records a water temperature range of 73–79 °F for the species; PlanetCatfish lists 77–84 °F for aquarium conditions, suggesting some thermal plasticity. The upper Paraná invasion data indicates it tolerates the limnological conditions of both riverine and standing-water habitats. Substrate is typically fine silt, sand, and leaf/detritus accumulations.
Feeding
Loricariichthys platymetopon is an omnivore with a strong detritivorous and microphagous component. PlanetCatfish records the genus as consuming 'a lot of detritus and sediments, plus algae, microcrustaceans, fungi, plant remains, and larval insects' — a typical Loricariini broad-spectrum benthic diet that differs from the strict algae-grazing of Harttiini genera and from the invertebrate-focused diet of open-substrate predators. FishBase records a trophic level of 2.5 (±0.19), placing it firmly in the detritivore-herbivore range.
The mouth is subterminal and disc-like, with bicuspid teeth suited to scraping biofilm and soft organic matter from sand and mud rather than hard substrates. In nature the species sifts through fine bottom sediments and consumes associated microorganisms, fungal matter, and algae. Chironomid larvae and other small invertebrates found in benthic sediments almost certainly contribute to the diet.
In the aquarium, L. platymetopon does best on a varied diet that mirrors this broad natural intake: high-quality sinking catfish pellets with a significant plant/algae component, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach, peas), occasional live or frozen chironomid larvae and daphnia. A fine sand substrate allows natural foraging behaviour. The species does not aggressively compete for food and should not be housed with boisterous bottom-dwellers that will consume food before it settles.
Mating
The mating behaviour of Loricariichthys platymetopon centres on the male's modified lower lip, which serves as the brood-carrying structure and is the primary basis for sexual selection in this species. In breeding condition, males develop a dramatically expanded, fleshy lower lip pad that is distinctly broader and thicker than the female's; this hypertrophy is visible in hobbyist photographs on PlanetCatfish, including a dedicated close-up captioned 'modified lower lip used in egg clutch carrying'. Males in prime condition can be identified by this structure even before spawning.
Courtship and spawning in the wild occur on floodplain breeding grounds, with studies (Cardim et al., 2019) documenting that reproductive activity in the upper Paraná system peaks in floodplain lagoons during warmer periods when water temperatures and food availability are highest. Spawning is likely substrate-oriented — eggs are deposited on flat surfaces such as leaf litter, sand, or submerged vegetation, then gathered by the male.
In an aquarium context, pairs are best conditioned by varied feeding, slightly elevated temperature, and a change in water chemistry (mimicking seasonal flood-pulse conditions), though captive spawning reports for this species are rare.
Breeding
Loricariichthys platymetopon is one of the lip-brooding Loricariini in which the male carries the fertilised egg mass held against the ventral face of his enlarged lower lip. The female deposits a clutch of demersal eggs, the male fertilises them, and then collects the adhesive eggs onto his lip pad, where they are held as a compact mass during incubation. Fecundity data from Cardim et al. (2019) from wild-caught females in the upper Paraná floodplain recorded batch fecundity of 372–1,392 oocytes per gram of female body weight and relative batch fecundity of 16–49 oocytes per centimetre of standard length — indicating moderately prolific reproduction compared to cave-spawning plecos.
The male carries the egg mass throughout incubation. Incubation period is not precisely documented in published aquarium literature; in related lip-brooders it is typically 5–10 days at tropical temperatures. The eggs are large for a loricariid, reflecting the parental investment in brooding. Males in lip-brooding mode are conspicuous and somewhat impeded in normal locomotion; they should not be stressed during this period.
PlanetCatfish lists no registered captive breeding reports for this species. Hobbyists attempting breeding should provide a large, stable aquarium with fine substrate, warm stable temperatures (77–82 °F), good oxygenation, and thorough conditioning with live and frozen invertebrate foods before attempting to trigger spawning with a partial water change simulating seasonal flooding.
In the aquarium
Loricariichthys platymetopon is an uncommon species in the hobby, occasionally imported from Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. Only three registered keepers are listed on PlanetCatfish as of the most recent update, reflecting its rarity and the challenges of its large adult size. At up to 15.5 in TL and 311 g, this is a substantial whiptail that requires a tank of at least 55–65 US gal for a single specimen and considerably more for a pair.
Substrate must be fine sand. The species spends most of its time on the bottom, using the ventral surface to rest flat and the modified mouth to sift through sediment; coarse gravel abrades the delicate ventral surface. Siltier conditions with scattered leaf litter reproduce the floodplain-lagoon habitat where the species breeds in the wild.
Water parameters should reflect La Plata basin origin: temperature 75–82 °F (slightly warmer than some Loricariini), pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Good filtration is essential given the bioload of a large catfish; regular 25–30% water changes are advisable. The species is facultatively air-breathing (a trait documented across Loricariinae) and can briefly surface in poorly oxygenated conditions, but well-oxygenated water is preferable.
As a slow-feeding, peaceful bottom-dweller the species is best kept with calm mid-water tankmates — medium tetras, hatchetfish, peaceful cichlids of comparable size — and away from aggressive bottom-dwellers. The adult male's spectacular lip modifications and the brooding behaviour, if it can be induced, make this a truly remarkable display fish for the dedicated loricariid specialist.
Conservation
Loricariichthys platymetopon was assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in October 2020, based on its wide distribution across the La Plata River basin and the absence of detectable range-wide decline. The species is widespread and apparently abundant across its native range in Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil, and its adaptability is demonstrated by its successful invasion and colonisation of the upper Paraná floodplain following the creation of Itaipu Reservoir in 1982.
As documented by Cardim et al. (2019), the species' spread into the upper Paraná is treated as an ecological concern for native fish communities there, with biotic resistance from intact habitats in the Ivinheima River (part of the Environmental Protection Area of the Islands and Marshes of the Paraná) partially limiting its reproductive success. The species' success as an invader paradoxically underscores its conservation robustness in its native range.
The main long-term threats to native populations are the same as those facing other La Plata basin fish: river regulation by dams and weirs, floodplain drainage for agriculture, and water quality degradation from agricultural runoff. None of these currently rise to a level that threatens the species at range scale.
