Schizodon vittatus was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1850, placing it in the genus Schizodon within the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — in the order Characiformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Schizodon as a genus of roughly a dozen valid South American species distinguished from the closely related genera Leporinus and Anostomus chiefly by dentition and jaw structure, all sharing the family's characteristic oblique, head-down grazing posture.
The genus name Schizodon derives from Greek schizo ("to split") and odon ("tooth"), a reference to the fish's distinctive multicuspid, notched teeth adapted for scraping algae and plant material rather than the single-cusp cutting teeth of predatory characins.
