Serrasalmus eigenmanni, the pinche or Eigenmann's piranha, is a solitary, hard-biting predator from the Amazon and Rio Negro basins and the rivers of the Guiana Shield, marked out by a dark spot behind the gill cover and a flush of red or orange across the operculum. Unlike the shoaling Pygocentrus species that dominate the popular idea of "piranha," this is a fish that lives — and is kept — alone: it is territorial toward its own kind and a notorious fin-nipper of anything sharing its space, a real behavioural risk rather than a man-eating myth. In the aquarium it rewards a keeper who accepts those limits: one fish, heavy cover, strong filtration and a diet of meaty foods rather than live fish. This article separates what is documented about the species from what is simply piranha folklore.

Taxonomy & naming

Serrasalmus eigenmanni was described by the British ichthyologist John Roxborough Norman in 1929, part of the wave of Serrasalmus descriptions from South American collections made in the early twentieth century. It sits within the family Serrasalmidae — piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — in the order Characiformes, and within the large genus Serrasalmus, whose species (unlike the four-species genus Pygocentrus) are mostly solitary, territorial predators rather than shoaling fish. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Serrasalmus eigenmanni as a valid species; GBIF's taxonomic record likewise confirms the name and placement.

The species epithet honours Carl H. Eigenmann (1863–1927), the German-born American ichthyologist whose survey work on South American freshwater fishes shaped much of the early taxonomy of the region's characins, including groundwork that later authors such as Norman built on. Serrasalmus is a taxonomically difficult genus — species boundaries have shifted repeatedly as material has been re-examined — and eigenmanni is one of the smaller-bodied, less frequently discussed members of the genus in the aquarium literature, often confused in the trade with other slender, red-cheeked Serrasalmus.

Morphology

Serrasalmus eigenmanni shows the classic Serrasalmus build: a laterally compressed, moderately deep body, an underslung lower jaw, and a single row of interlocking, triangular, razor-edged teeth used to shear flesh and fins rather than to crush. FishBase lists a maximum size around 14 in SL for wild specimens, though aquarium fish are considerably smaller and more typically run 6.5–8 in TL; a separate hobby source suggests wild maxima may run larger still, closer to 12 in or beyond, though this is not firmly documented.

The species is identifiable by a dark spot on the body just behind the gill cover and by red-to-orange colouration across the operculum (gill cover) — a field mark shared, confusingly, by several other Serrasalmus species, which makes reliable identification difficult without expert comparison. Body colour is otherwise silvery, in keeping with most piranhas of open Amazonian water, and there is no documented external difference between the sexes.

Habitat

The species is native to South America, recorded from the Amazon River basin and the black waters of the Rio Negro, as well as rivers draining the Guiana Shield, giving it a range spanning Brazil, Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname. Within that range it occupies typical Amazonian river and tributary habitat rather than a single specialised niche, and — like many Serrasalmus — it is associated with structure: submerged wood, root tangles and dense marginal cover that a solitary ambush predator can use to stage attacks and retreat from larger fish.

Water across its native range runs warm and mildly acidic to neutral; cited aquarium parameters are roughly 70–81 °F (with an optimal band closer to 72–79 °F) and pH 6.2–7.4 (optimal around 6.5–7.0), consistent with the soft, tannin-influenced water typical of Rio Negro and Amazon tributary systems, without needing to assume the extreme blackwater conditions of the Rio Negro's darkest channels specifically.

Feeding

Serrasalmus eigenmanni is an opportunistic carnivore and a well-documented fin-nipper — hobby sources describe it as capable of parasitising the fins of other fish, biting and moving on rather than necessarily killing outright, in the same pattern seen across the genus. In the wild this translates into a diet of smaller fish, fins and scales taken from larger fish, insects, crustaceans and other invertebrate prey, with carrion taken opportunistically.

In the aquarium it accepts a varied meaty diet: fish fillet, whole frozen fish, shrimp, mussel, insects, earthworms, bloodworms and quality prepared/pellet foods. Keepers are specifically cautioned against feeding live vertebrates (feeder fish carry disease risk and offer no established nutritional advantage), and against relying on any single food item. Because of its territorial, aggressive temperament, it should be fed alone or with enough cover that feeding does not become a flashpoint with tankmates — in practice this species is usually the sole fish occupant of its tank.

Mating

Very little is documented specifically about courtship behaviour in Serrasalmus eigenmanni. What is recorded for the species in the hobby and trade literature is that it spawns as a substrate scatterer in the wild, in keeping with the broader pattern for true piranhas of pairing off and defending a nest site rather than mouthbrooding or building a bubble nest. No detailed account of pairing, courtship display or external sexing exists in the sources available for this species, and given its solitary, highly territorial temperament even toward its own species, successfully forming and observing a compatible pair is itself a significant obstacle that keepers rarely attempt or achieve.

Breeding

As with other true piranhas, Serrasalmus eigenmanni is reported to be a substrate spawner in nature, with a pair clearing and guarding a nest site among cover and producing adhesive eggs that are fended off and, in related species, fanned by a guarding parent. However, unlike Pygocentrus nattereri — which is bred routinely in large hobbyist groups and commercially for the trade — no well-documented captive breeding protocol exists for S. eigenmanni. Sources describe only anecdotal, unconfirmed accounts of captive spawning, with no consistent record of a keeper successfully pairing, spawning and rearing the species at home.

This is unsurprising given the species' solitary, highly aggressive disposition: keeping even a compatible male and female together long enough to pair and spawn, without one injuring or killing the other, is a serious practical barrier that most keepers do not attempt. Prospective breeders should treat this species as effectively unbred in the hobby and expect no reliable template to follow.

In the aquarium

Serrasalmus eigenmanni is a solitary species and should be kept that way: it is described across hobby sources as highly territorial, very aggressive and a persistent fin-nipper that cannot be safely housed with other piranhas or, in most cases, with any other fish. The rare exception noted in the literature is heavily armoured catfish given extensive cover, and even that pairing is not guaranteed to be safe long-term. This is a fundamentally different keeping model from shoaling Pygocentrus species — there is no safety-in-numbers effect here, because the aggression is directed at conspecifics as much as at anything else.

A single specimen needs a reasonably large tank — one source recommends a minimum of roughly 120×50×19.5 in — with strong filtration to handle a predator's bioload and mess, dense hiding places (driftwood, roots, robust plants) and dim, low-disturbance lighting, since the species is described as skittish and fast-swimming despite its predatory reputation. As with all Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus species, the jaws are genuinely capable of a serious bite and the fish should be moved by container, never handled or netted casually. Prospective keepers should also check local and state law before acquiring any piranha, since the genus is restricted or banned in many U.S. states and a number of countries, and a piranha should never be released into open water.

Conservation

Serrasalmus eigenmanni has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; no assessment for the species appears in Red List search results, so its status is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE) rather than assumed to be of low concern. This is a common situation for lesser-known Serrasalmus species spread across a wide but poorly monitored range of Amazonian and Guiana Shield river systems, where fine-grained population data is largely absent.

The species does not appear to be a significant target of commercial fisheries or large-scale aquarium export in the way that Pygocentrus nattereri is, and the general conservation pressures relevant to Amazon and Guiana Shield freshwater fish generally — deforestation-linked sedimentation, water-quality change and, regionally, mining impacts on rivers like the Rio Negro system — are the most relevant long-term watch items even in the absence of a formal assessment for this particular species.
