Serrasalmus humeralis is a modest-sized piranha of the Amazon basin — most published sources cap it at only around 8 in standard length, small by the standards of its genus — and, like most of its relatives, it is a wary opportunist rather than a man-eater. Its everyday habit in the wild is fin- and scale-nipping and scavenging, not hunting in packs, and the reputation piranhas have earned from documentary footage overstates the risk to anything but tankmates and careless fingers. Unlike the shoaling Pygocentrus species, Serrasalmus piranhas are territorial and antisocial, and this species is best kept alone in a large tank rather than in a group. It also carries a cautionary footnote for U.S. keepers: an introduced population once became established in Dade County, Florida, before being eradicated in 1981, a reminder that piranhas are restricted or banned in many states and must never be released.

Serrasalmus humeralis was described by the French ichthyologist Achille Valenciennes in 1850, part of the same wave of Neotropical fish descriptions that gave science most of the classical piranha genera. It belongs to the family Serrasalmidae — the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Serrasalmus, the most species-rich of the true piranha genera and the one the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as the valid placement for this species; GBIF likewise lists Serrasalmus humeralis Valenciennes, 1850 as the accepted combination.

Serrasalmus is a taxonomically difficult genus — many species are separated by fine differences in humeral (shoulder) spot pattern, dentition and body proportions, and the group has seen repeated revision as material is re-examined. The common name "pirambeba" is a regional Brazilian/Amazonian term applied to several small-bodied Serrasalmus piranhas, and the "black-shoulder spot" descriptor used in some hobby sources refers to the dark humeral marking used to help distinguish this species from its many close relatives.

Morphology

Serrasalmus humeralis has the typical Serrasalmus build: a deep, laterally compressed body, a robust head with a strongly underslung lower jaw, and a single row of sharp, interlocking triangular teeth adapted for shearing fins, scales and flesh.
