Taxonomy & naming
Serrasalmus medinai was described by the Venezuelan ichthyologist Agustín Fernández-Yépez under the authorship attributed to Ramírez in 1965, and it belongs to the family Serrasalmidae — the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — within the order Characiformes. The genus Serrasalmus is the largest genus of true piranhas, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) remains the reference point for the valid species boundaries within a genus long known for difficult, overlapping species-level identification based on subtle differences in humeral spot, dentition and body proportions.
The species is confined to the Orinoco basin of Venezuela, a region shared with several other Serrasalmus species and with Pygocentrus cariba, the Orinoco relative of the more familiar red-bellied piranha. Correct identification of S. medinai in the field or the trade rests on comparison with these co-occurring species, and the common name "pinche piranha" is used alongside "Medina's piranha" in some hobby and regional references.
Morphology
Serrasalmus medinai is a comparatively small piranha: FishBase records a maximum size of 6 in standard length, well under the size reached by the large, well-known Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus species. Like other members of the genus it carries the compressed, deep-bodied piranha silhouette with a single row of interlocking, triangular, razor-edged teeth in each jaw — the hallmark dentition of the true piranhas, replaced in sets rather than one tooth at a time.
A distinctive feature of this species' natural history is tied directly to its appearance: juveniles are reported to closely resemble young Pygocentrus cariba, a resemblance good enough that the young S. medinai can shelter within P. cariba shoals without being immediately singled out. Habitat

As with every piranha, the jaws and teeth warrant real respect at feeding and during any netting or transfer, and a container rather than a net is the safer way to move the fish. Piranhas of this genus are restricted, permit-controlled or banned outright in many U.S. states and a number of countries, so a keeper must check local and state law before acquiring one, and must never release a piranha into open water under any circumstances.
