Serrasalmus nalseni was described by the Venezuelan ichthyologist Agustín Fernández-Yépez in 1969. It belongs to the family Serrasalmidae — the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Serrasalmus, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as the largest genus of true piranhas, most of its species solitary and territorial rather than shoaling like the closely related Pygocentrus.
Serrasalmus is a taxonomically difficult genus: many species are similar in body shape and colouration, and identification within the group has historically relied on fine details of dentition, humeral spot pattern and body proportions. S. nalseni is one of the smaller-bodied and more narrowly distributed members of the genus, known only from the Orinoco basin, and it does not appear regularly in the aquarium trade or in the literature relative to more widely kept congeners such as S. maculatus or S. rhombeus.
