Taxonomy & naming
Serrasalmus odyssei was formally described by Nicolas Hubert and Jean-François Renno in 2010 as part of a broader revision of Serrasalmus diversity in the upper Madeira basin, a region that has proven to hold far more distinct piranha lineages than older taxonomy recognised. It belongs to the family Serrasalmidae — the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Serrasalmus, the group of solitary, single-tank "true piranhas" distinguished from the shoaling genus Pygocentrus by generally slimmer bodies, different dentition details and largely solitary, territorial habits.
The species is part of a recognised species complex in the upper Madeira drainage, and field sources describe at least two morphologically distinguishable forms — a Bolivian type and a Peruvian type — within what is currently treated as S. odyssei, a reminder that Serrasalmidae taxonomy in this region remains actively worked out. As with many recently described, geographically restricted Serrasalmus, it is easily confused in the field with juvenile Serrasalmus rhombeus, the black piranha, with which it is frequently found schooling at similar sizes; reliable identification rests on technical characters such as dorsal and anal fin ray counts and the shape of the supraoccipital spine rather than on colour alone.
Morphology
Serrasalmus odyssei has the compressed, deep-bodied silhouette typical of the genus, though FishBase notes it runs shallower-bodied than many other Serrasalmus species — a useful, if subtle, field character. It carries 13–15 soft rays in the dorsal fin and 28–33 in the anal fin, and a notably short supraoccipital spine at the back of the skull, both diagnostic details used to separate it from its close relatives in original descriptions and identification keys.
Size is modest for the genus: FishBase records a maximum of 6.5 in standard length, and field-collected study specimens documented by OPEFE topped out around 5–5.5 in SL, meaning most individuals encountered in the wild are considerably smaller than the largest Serrasalmus species. As with other piranhas, the jaws carry a single row of interlocking, triangular, razor-edged teeth built for shearing rather than crushing.
Habitat
The species is known from the upper Madeira basin spanning Bolivia and Brazil, with records from the Río San Martín, Río Paraguá (in the Iténez/Guaporé watershed), Río Beni, Río Manuripi and Río Yata systems. It appears most abundant in the Iténez (Guaporé) watershed and comparatively scarce elsewhere across its known range.
Within these drainages, Serrasalmus odyssei favours clear-water to blackwater river margins in shallow sections close to shore, particularly where accumulations of sunken and dead wood provide cover; it is reported as scarce in open, fast-flowing whitewater river channels. It is frequently found alongside juvenile Serrasalmus rhombeus of similar body size, suggesting overlapping habitat preference at this life stage. Feeding

As with other true piranhas in the genus Serrasalmus, when breeding has been documented in the group it follows a substrate-spawning pattern: a paired male and female clear and defend a nest site, the female releases adhesive eggs that the male fertilises, and the eggs are guarded and fanned at the site — most often by the male — until they hatch within a few days. What can be said follows from its genus and its modest recorded size (up to 6.5 in SL): like other true piranhas, Serrasalmus are solitary and territorially aggressive rather than shoaling, and cohabitation with conspecifics or similarly sized tankmates commonly leads to fin damage or worse — most keepers of Serrasalmus house a single specimen per tank rather than a group.
If ever obtained, a heavily wooded, well-filtered tank sized to a mature Serrasalmus (commonly 300+ litres for a solitary adult of this genus) with dim lighting and secure cover would follow standard practice for the genus, though no S. odyssei-specific guidance exists to confirm exact figures. The jaws are genuinely capable of a serious bite and the fish should always be moved by container, not net. Critically, piranhas of the genus Serrasalmus are restricted, permit-controlled or outright banned in many U.S. states and countries due to invasive-species concern, so a keeper must verify local and state law before acquiring one, and must never release a piranha into open water.
Conservation
Serrasalmus odyssei is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. It occupies a defined but multi-river range across the upper Madeira basin in Bolivia and Brazil, and while it is reported as abundant in the Iténez (Guaporé) watershed, it is described as scarce elsewhere in its known range, meaning its status could bear watching if habitat pressure in specific tributaries increases.
No major species-specific threats are documented in the sources reviewed.
