Taxonomy & naming
Roeboides dispar was described in 2001 by Lucena as part of a taxonomic revision of the Roeboides microlepis group. The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Roeboides dispar Lucena, 2001. ITIS assigns it taxon serial number 641677 and places it in the order Characiformes, family Characidae, subfamily Characinae. The genus Roeboides Günther, 1864, belongs to the characin subfamily Characinae and groups several species of lepidophagous (scale-eating) fishes across tropical South and Central America.
The specific epithet dispar is Latin for unlike or dissimilar, applied by Lucena to reflect the species' diagnostic character within the genus: the extraordinary count of 31 to 48 maxillary conical teeth, which contrasts sharply with the 19 or fewer teeth seen in its congeners and was central to the 2001 revision's separating it as a distinct species.
Morphology
Roeboides dispar reaches a maximum standard length of approximately 3 in, making it a small to medium member of the genus. The body form is typical of Roeboides: laterally compressed, somewhat deep-bodied, and predominantly silvery with a translucent quality to the flanks.
