A compact, laterally-eyed algae grazer from the Bolivia–Brazil border rivers, Hypoptopoma baileyi is one of thirteen species in a genus whose members are distinguished from the more familiar Otocinclus by their broader, flatter body, near-360° lateral eye placement, and a facultative air-breathing habit that lets them exploit poorly oxygenated marginal waters.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypoptopoma baileyi was described by Aquino and Schaefer in 2010 in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History (volume 336, pages 1–110), a monographic revision of the entire genus Hypoptopoma Günther, 1868. The revision described six new species and recognised thirteen species total within the genus. H. baileyi was described from the Río Iténez — also known as the Río Guaporé — in the upper Madeira basin along the Bolivia–Brazil border. The holotype is a female measuring 1.5 in SL.

The genus Hypoptopoma is placed within the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae of the family Loricariidae (Siluriformes). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Hypoptopoma baileyi Aquino & Schaefer, 2010 as a valid species.

The species epithet honours ichthyologist Reeve M. Bailey (1914–2011), long-serving curator at the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology and a significant contributor to Neotropical freshwater ichthyology. Bailey's career spanned decades of collection work across South American river systems, and his specimens form part of the foundational museum material that enabled revisions such as the Aquino & Schaefer monograph.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 1.5 in total length (TL), placing H. baileyi among the smaller species in the genus. The body plan is characteristic of Hypoptopoma: broader and flatter than the closely related Otocinclus, with eyes positioned laterally to provide a wide visual field — approaching 360° in some positions — rather than the more dorso-lateral placement seen in many suckermouth catfishes.

The tail peduncle in cross-section is ovate rather than fully round, a character that helps distinguish Hypoptopoma from superficially similar otocinclus catfishes. The armour of bony scutes covers the flanks and dorsal surface in the typical loricariid pattern. Ground coloration and specific plate-arrangement characters distinguish H. baileyi from its congeners — the Aquino & Schaefer (2010) revision provides detailed osteological and external morphological diagnoses.

Sexual dimorphism in this species has not been specifically described in available sources. Within the genus, females are generally broader-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

Hypoptopoma baileyi is known from the Río Iténez (Río Guaporé) drainage in the upper Madeira basin, straddling the Bolivia–Brazil border. The Guaporé is a large, slow-moving lowland river that forms much of the frontier between Bolivia and the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, draining a mosaic of Cerrado savannas, seasonally flooded grasslands, and gallery forest.

Hypoptopoma species in general inhabit the marginal zones of rivers and associated floodplain waters — areas with moderate to low current along heavily vegetated banks, submerged root tangles, aquatic macrophytes, and floating meadows. The genus is facultatively air-breathing through the intestine, an adaptation that allows exploitation of seasonally hypoxic habitats such as isolated floodplain pools and dense macrophyte beds where dissolved oxygen may drop sharply at night or during the dry season.

Specific water-chemistry data for H. baileyi at its collection localities are not available in the sourced material. Tropical lowland conditions in the upper Madeira basin are typically warm (75–86 °F / 75–86 °F) with pH ranging from mildly acidic to near-neutral depending on proximity to Andean sediment inputs versus blackwater tributaries.

Feeding

Hypoptopoma baileyi is a herbivore and detritivore, grazing algae, periphyton (aufwuchs), and fine organic detritus from submerged surfaces. FishBase assigns it a trophic level of 2.3 ± 0.1, consistent with a primary consumer feeding low on the food chain. In practice, Hypoptopoma species work the biofilm-covered surfaces of aquatic vegetation, wood, and substrate in marginal river habitats, rasping with their ventral suckermouth in the manner typical of hypoptopomatines.

In the aquarium, the diet should centre on algae-covered surfaces and plant matter: algae wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette/zucchini, cucumber, spinach), and any algal growth the tank produces naturally. Small invertebrate foods can supplement the diet. Aufwuchs-rich surfaces — moss walls, heavily colonised driftwood — represent ideal natural feeding opportunities.

Mating

No specific courtship observations for H. baileyi are available in the sourced literature. Within the broader genus Hypoptopoma and the Hypoptopomatinae subfamily, spawning is typically a substrate-based affair, with eggs deposited on plant leaves, glass, or other smooth surfaces, following general otocinclus-like patterns rather than the cave-spawning strategy of many larger loricariids.

The laterally positioned eyes of Hypoptopoma likely play a role in visual communication and mate assessment, though this has not been studied specifically in H. baileyi.

Breeding

Breeding of Hypoptopoma baileyi in captivity has not been documented in the available hobby or scientific literature. The species is essentially unknown in the ornamental trade. General breeding approaches applicable to the genus — based on better-known hypoptopomatines — would involve conditioning on a varied plant-based diet, maintaining clean, well-oxygenated water, and providing fine-leaved aquatic plants or moss as spawning surfaces. A small temperature drop or increased water-change frequency mimicking the onset of the Guaporé wet season may serve as a spawning trigger, as it does for related otocinclines.

Given the absence of confirmed captive records, any breeding attempt would represent a novel hobbyist achievement for the species.

In the aquarium

Hypoptopoma baileyi is essentially absent from the ornamental trade and not available through normal hobby channels. When (or if) encountered, care requirements would align with those of the genus: a peaceful community fish suited to a planted or heavily furnished aquarium, with temperatures in the tropical range (72–82 °F / 72–82 °F) and pH broadly flexible within 6.0–7.5. Clean, well-oxygenated water matters more than specific chemistry within this range.

Hypoptopoma species are peaceful and can be kept in groups; they pose no threat to plants (beyond grazing algae) and are compatible with small, peaceful fish. The facultative air-breathing habit means the fish will occasionally surface to gulp air — this is normal behaviour and not a sign of oxygen deficiency, though adequate surface agitation remains advisable.

As with all small algae-grazing loricariids, a mature aquarium with established biofilm growth is far preferable to a newly set-up tank. Supplementary feeding with algae-based sinking foods is important once tank algae is limited.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypoptopoma baileyi as Least Concern in July 2023. The species is known from the Río Iténez (Guaporé) drainage in the upper Madeira basin. No specific population data are available, and collection pressure for the ornamental trade is effectively nil given the species' absence from commerce.

The upper Madeira basin and Guaporé drainage face pressures from agricultural expansion, particularly soy cultivation in the Cerrado and Mato Grosso region, which contributes to sedimentation and altered hydrology in river margins. Floodplain modification — which affects the marginal vegetation habitats Hypoptopoma depends on — is a broader concern for the genus. At present, H. baileyi is not considered at risk.
